Gorgany Mountains – a corner of wild nature and a reserve in the Ukrainian Carpathians
The unique Gorgany reserve (massif) is a very specific mountain range of the Ukrainian Carpathians that cannot be confused with any other. The Gorgany Mountains are numerous gray stone placers covered with yellow-greenish lichen and fine moss, lying on almost every peak. And such Gorgan trails, intertwined with roots, and mushroom moss forests probably do not exist anywhere else...
The Gorgany massif (translated from the Romanian word "gorgan" meaning "barrow") is one of the most forested and least traversed mountain ranges in the Carpathians, located in two regions – Ivano-Frankivsk and Transcarpathian.
The highest and most famous peak of the Gorgany massif is Mount Velyka Syvulya (1836 m). No less popular among outdoor enthusiasts are Mount Mala Syvulya (1818), Mount Ihrovec (1804), Mount Vysoka (1803), Mount Bratkivska (1788), Mount Hropa (1763), Mount Dovbushanka (1754), Mount Grofa (1748), Mount Velyka Popadya (1740), Mount Vedmezhik (1735), Mount Parenky (1735), Mount Moloda (1723), Mount Strimba (1719), Mount Chorna Kleva (1719), Mount Durnya (1709), Mount Borevka (1694), Mount Bushtul (1691), Mount Yayko-Ilemske (1679), Mount Korotkan (1679), Mount Bert (1666), Mount Sinyak (1665), Mount Yayko-Pereginske (1595), Mount Horgan-Ilemskiy (1587), Mount Khomyak (1542) and others.
Features of the Gorgany Mountains
The Gorgany Mountains are quite a peculiar massif, with their own characteristics. The massif is characterized by not very high elevations (averaging 1400-1500 m), but significant differences between them.
Almost all peaks have very steep slopes covered with mixed deciduous, fir, and beech forests. The ridges and mountain tops are mostly treeless, covered with yellow stone debris, which undoubtedly is a true hallmark of Gorgany.
Another feature of the Gorgany massif is its extraordinary picturesque nature. Indeed, under good weather conditions, incredible views of the Carpathians and part of Prykarpattia open from the ridges and peaks.
The stone debris makes the Gorgany Mountains unusual and unique. Over time, yellowish lichens and small moss of green-brown color grow on the stones, which together create the impression of some cosmic, extraterrestrial origin of those stones.
It is worth noting that in rain or thick fog, the "gorgany cosmic stones" become very slippery, so when crossing in such conditions, one must be especially careful and weigh each step. And even better, if bad weather is forecasted in the coming days, it is better to refrain from such a hike.
Speaking of the Gorgany reserve, one cannot fail to mention the "beloved" by tourists jerup – dense thickets of wild mountain pine, almost inaccessible shrub thickets. The height of the bushes varies greatly – from 1 m to 2-3 m. Jerup is found on almost all ridges and peaks of the Gorgany massif, so it is worth remembering this when planning a hike and taking appropriate footwear and clothing to minimize scratches and avoid twisting an ankle on the intertwined roots of jerup trails.
The Gorgany Mountains are favored by tourists
There are many marked hiking trails in the Gorgany area, and their number is actively growing every year. Therefore, guides and rescuers recommend not to seek adventures on your own, not to plan and lay your own routes, but to use the marked and verified ones. Considering the steep descents and numerous stone debris, which can become impassable and very dangerous for life and health in bad weather, it is better to follow the advice of experienced tourists and adhere to the marked Carpathian trails.
The best time for hiking in the Gorgany Mountains is summer and the first half of autumn: in spring, snow lies on some slopes until early June, and in the second half of autumn, prolonged rains begin. Well, we won't mention winter, as the snow cover can reach 2 meters or more, which almost makes movement impossible.
Due to the steep slopes, stone debris, dense thickets of forests, and jerup bushes, Gorgany is considered one of the least accessible mountain ranges in the Carpathians. Perhaps that is why wild animals such as wild boars, deer, roe deer, wolves, or even bears can often be encountered here.
Resting in Gorgany
It is believed that due to the inaccessibility of Gorgany, a huge number of outdoor enthusiasts and extreme sports fans come here every year. Due to the landscape features, exciting mountain races "Gorgany Race" take place here every year. Participants of the competition need to cover 90 km in 30 hours, and along the way, they encounter various natural obstacles – icy water, high walls, steep descents, etc.
On the territory of the Gorgany massif, mainly Hutsuls and Boykos live. They are friendly and kind people, hospitable hosts who are always happy to welcome guests and offer comfortable cottages and homesteads, conduct tours of the mountains, and introduce local customs and traditions.
