The Carpathians are a region that is famous for its extraordinary natural beauty. Huge mountain ranges, waterfalls, forests and fields create a unique landscape that attracts tourists from all over the world. One of the greatest natural resources is the Carpathian lakes. Their beauty and unusual nature attracts millions of tourists every year.
The Carpathian lakes have their own characteristics and differ in size, shape, depth, and location. They are usually divided into several types:
Karst lakes are the most common type of lakes in the Carpathians. They are formed as a result of the dissolution of rocks containing carbonates. The most famous examples of karst lakes in Ukraine are Synevyr and Morshyn lakes.
Mountain lakes are reservoirs formed as a result of glacial processes. They are located on high mountain plateaus and have unusual shapes. One of the most famous examples of mountain lakes in the Carpathians is Lake Nesamovyte.
Marsh lakes are reservoirs that are formed as a result of the decomposition of organic residues and plant material. Such lakes are usually located in the flat areas of the Carpathians and are very difficult to access. The most famous marsh lakes are the lakes of the Synevyr marshes.
Man-made lakes are reservoirs that were created as a result of the construction of dams and other hydraulic structures. Their main purpose is to provide water to the local population and irrigate agricultural land. The most famous man-made lakes in the Carpathians are the Cheremosh Reservoir and the Stryi Reservoir.
The Carpathian lakes are not only natural beauties, but also a place where you can enjoy peace and quiet. The most beautiful Carpathian lakes are:
Synevyr - the largest lake in the Carpathians, which has a depth of more than 20 meters. It is located at an altitude of 989 meters above sea level and has an unusual blue color. That is why it is called the "blue lake".
Lake Maricheika. It is located on the route to Pip Ivan Chornohirsky in a cozy place. The surrounding forest creates a cozy atmosphere and fabulous impressions.
Nesamovite Lake is a lake that has an unusual shape and is located at an altitude of 1750 meters above sea level. It was formed as a result of glacial processes and has a depth of more than 1-2 meters.
Brebeneskul is the highest mountain lake in the Carpathians. It is located at an altitude of 1800 meters under the eponymous Brebeneskul peak, which is the second highest mountain in Ukraine after Hoverla.
Swimming in the lakes of the Carpathians is possible, but not recommended, as the water is very cold and can be dangerous to health. Also, mountain lakes are separate ecosystems for which any human intervention would be a violation.
Most lakes in the Carpathians can be reached only on foot. However, some lakes can be seen from the road that passes through mountain passes. The most convenient way to get to the Carpathian lakes is by car or bus.
