Chechva Reservoir

Chechva Reservoir, Rozhniativ

The Chechva Reservoir, also called the Rozhniativ Reservoir, lies on the Chechva river near Rozhniativ in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast. The Chechva rises in the Gorgany mountains and flows into the Limnytsia, a left tributary of the Dniester. The reservoir was designed in 1963 and construction began in 1967; its dam, about 10 m high, stands upstream of the village of Svarychiv.

  • River: Chechva (Limnytsia and Dniester basin)
  • Area: about 228 ha
  • Volume: 12.1 million m³, 7.6 million m³ usable
  • Owner: Karpatnaftokhim LLC

It was built to supply industry in Kalush and today provides the town with drinking and process water; the Kalush combined heat and power plant also uses its water, and the small Svarychiv hydropower station runs on it. In summer 2026 residents noticed that the reservoir was quickly getting shallower and silting up, and called on the community to clean it.

The reservoir is popular with anglers: according to Wikipedia, pike, perch, roach, Prussian carp and common carp are caught here. Fishing follows the general Recreational Fishing Rules, with a spawning ban from 1 April to 10 June. The year-round ban applies to the Chechva river and its tributaries above the reservoir, not to the reservoir itself. Take care on the ice in winter — details in the fishing section and in Fishing in the Carpathians.

Limits and rules

Daily limit3 kg + 1 fish
Feethe reservoir is not leased (it is not in the state register) — general rules apply; anglers’ websites say fishing is free, but this has not been officially confirmed
Hooksno more than 7 per angler
Minimum sizePike — 50 cm · Common carp — 30 cm

The reservoir is not on the list of places where the Ivano-Frankivsk fisheries patrol allowed fishing during the 2026 spawning ban, so no fishing here from 1 April to 10 June. The Chechva river with its tributaries from the source down to the reservoir is closed to fishing all year — that ban covers the river above the reservoir, not the reservoir itself. Take care in winter: in February 2023 the local council temporarily banned fishing because of dangerous ice.
