Mount Pip Ivan of Chornohora (Pip Ivan, Black Mountain)
Pip Ivan Chornohirsky (also known as "Pip Ivan" and "Black Mountain") is the third highest mountain (2028 m) after Hoverla (2061 m) and Brebeneskul (2035 m) in the Chornohora mountain range of the Ukrainian Carpathians.
Pip Ivan is located in the southeastern part of the main ridge of Chornohora in the Carpathian National Nature Park on the border of Zakarpattia and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.
The mountain is famous among outdoor enthusiasts for the fact that almost at its very top is the inactive Polish astronomical and meteorological observatory "White Elephant", which was built in the late 30s of the last century. Although no scientific research has been conducted here for a long time, the building still actively attracts tourists.
By the way, the observatory got the name "White Elephant" because in winter, when the building is covered with snow and ice on all sides, it looks like a giant animal that resembles an elephant from a distance.
Pip Ivan Chornohirsky is a very massive pyramidal mountain. At the very top, there are stone placers and subalpine vegetation, and up to an altitude of 1500-1600 meters, there are centuries-old spruce forests.
It is worth noting that the Montenegrin mountain range begins from Mount Pip Ivan, so it is from here that the conquest of the highest peaks of the Ukrainian Carpathians often begins.
The nearest settlements are the villages of Yavirnyk and Dzembronia (Verkhovyna district, Ivano-Frankivsk region).
