Babyna Kolyba, Kryvorivnia

Kryvorivnia, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

Babyna Kolyba («Granny's Koliba») serves authentic Hutsul food in Kryvorivnia, a village sometimes called the «Ukrainian Athens»: Ivan Franko, Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi and Lesia Ukrainka all stayed here, and «Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors» was filmed here. The koliba stands by the road next to the «Didova Apteka» (Grandpa's Pharmacy) museum and is easy to spot: a log house of enormous timbers under steep shingle roofs, a spacious covered terrace with tables and a bright sign reading «Tasty. Soulful. Authentic».

The idea is simple: you should feel like you're visiting your granny. Inside there are rough-hewn logs, warm lamps under a high timber ceiling, a whitewashed stove and an open hearth where meat is grilled over a live fire. Even the menu is partly written in Hutsul dialect, with names like «kuleshia z mochenkov» and «banush z brynzov». On Google Maps the koliba scores 4.4 from more than 500 reviews, and guests most often praise the homemade borscht, the cosiness and the friendly service.

What to try

  • kulesha with mochenka: Hutsul cornmeal kulesha with potatoes and a pork-belly sauce, best with brynza or huslianka; there is also kulesha «on potatoes»;
  • banosh with brynza and huslianka, cooked in homemade sour cream;
  • Verkhovyna-style knyshi: potato flatcakes with brynza, served with sour cream;
  • the «hot pan» with meat, potatoes and mushrooms, deruny with meat, courgette pancakes;
  • soups: bograch, borscht, mushroom soup;
  • from the grill: pork-neck shashlyk, ribs, blood sausage, sausages, grilled trout and smoked trout;
  • local dairy: budz (sheep's cheese) and huslianka (Hutsul soured milk);
  • varenyky with potato and brynza or with curd cheese, and for dessert varenyky with bilberries;
  • to drink: Granny's kvass, Granny's compote and «Didova Apteka» herbal tea.

Experience and celebrations

What stays with you is the smell of live fire, the timber walls and the home-style flavours. In summer you can sit outside under the roof, in winter in the hall by the stove. The koliba hosts banquets and family celebrations, has a separate banquet menu, and prepares special Christmas Eve and New Year menus. Combine lunch with a visit to the neighbouring «Didova Apteka» museum and a walk around Kryvorivnia with its wooden church and memorial museums.
