Lived-in Hutsul Grazhda on Ihrets, Kryvorivnia

Kryvorivnia, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

On the slopes of the Ihrets ridge above Kryvorivnia stands one of the few lived-in Hutsul grazhda homesteads still inhabited and farmed by a family. A grazhda is the traditional Hutsul fortress-farmstead: the house and farm buildings stand under a shared roof around an enclosed yard, protecting people and livestock from bad weather, wild animals and strangers. Very few such homesteads survive in the Carpathians, and most of those that do have become museums. Here it is different: this is not an exhibit but a real high-mountain farm where you can come as a guest and see Hutsul life as it is lived.

What the place is

According to visitors, the house was built around 1925 and has hardly changed since: a wooden shingle roof, carved door frames, a tiled stove, a weaving loom and milk cans in the yard. All around are meadows with haystacks and a panorama of the Chornohora range that opens up from exactly this spot. The family keeps a flock: according to the tour organisers, around forty sheep with lambs and about ten cows graze here, and their milk is turned into mountain cheese.

Do not confuse this place with the «Khata-Grazhda» museum in Kryvorivnia, where «Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors» was filmed: the museum is down in the valley, while the lived-in grazhda sits higher in the mountains on the way to the Ihrets summit.

What to do: a hike and Hutsul hospitality

  • Hike up Ihrets with a guide, or ride up by off-road vehicle — both are offered by the YO tour company from Verkhovyna.
  • Get to know the farm: the flock, the cows, the shepherd's hut and everyday life of a mountain family, with the hosts' stories about living up high.
  • Tasting of authentic Hutsul food — budz, vurda and brynza cheeses and home-made dishes.
  • Views of the Chornohora ridge, among the finest in the Verkhovyna area.

For families with children

The organisers recommend this route to families who want their children not only to see the mountains but to understand how people live in them. Kids can watch the sheep and lambs, see how milk becomes cheese and sit in a genuine old house. The climb is not difficult, but on foot it takes a few hours, so for younger children the off-road ride is more convenient. Remember that this is a private home: behave as a guest, do not enter without an invitation, and a small gift for the hosts is always welcome.
