A koliba in the spruce forest

Vedmezha Hora koliba in Yaremche (“Bear Mountain”) is a family restaurant that has long been one of the town’s most popular food addresses. The wooden koliba stands on a scenic slope in the Carpathian forest, and its open terrace looks out over the mountains and a small mountain lake. It is part of the Vedmezha Hora resort, but the koliba has a life of its own: it attracts not only hotel guests but also travellers looking for where to eat well in Yaremche in a genuine Hutsul atmosphere.

The restaurant describes its interior as authentically Hutsul, and the kitchen focuses on simple dishes made from local produce. The koliba is a member of the “Carpathian Culinary Heritage” network, which promotes regional recipes.

What to try

According to the restaurant itself, its most popular dishes are Hungarian bograch, mushroom soup, borscht, trout, banosh and house-made liqueurs. Worth ordering:

  • Polonyna banosh with cracklings, brynza sheep cheese and forest mushrooms.
  • Hearty Hungarian bograch, served spicy with sour cream and pickled pepper — a Zakarpattia classic.
  • Yaremche borscht with veal, garlic bun and mushroom salo spread.
  • Rich Hutsul dried-mushroom soup with homemade noodles or with cream.
  • Trout baked over embers with polonyna herbs, or river trout with porcini.
  • Zakarpattia-style veal goulash with dumplings, potato pancakes, blueberry varenyky or Hutsul poppy-seed dumplings.
  • For a group — “Hungry Bear”, a metre-long meat board with ribs, skewers and farmhouse sausages.

A special pride are the house liqueurs: Chornohora bilberry, cranberry, horseradish mead, galangal with mint, Yaremche apple and more — easiest to sample as a tasting flight. Non-alcoholic options include Carpathian uzvar (dried-fruit drink) and Hutsul compote. Below is a sample of menu prices — please check current prices at the restaurant.

Music, kids and the animal park

With beer they serve Zakarpattia shovdar ham, spicy basturma and duck breast smoked over alder, and the youngest guests get their own children’s page: chicken meatball soup, steamed cutlets with mashed potatoes and creamy pasta with chicken. Note that the Vedmezha Hora resort also has a separate Panorama restaurant with its own booking number — the Hutsul cooking and music evenings are in the koliba.

Every Friday the koliba hosts live Hutsul music evenings with local musicians on traditional instruments, so book your Friday table in advance. It works well for families: there are playgrounds with slides and a children’s menu, and right next door is a petting zoo / wildlife enclosure with forest animals and birds that children love to visit before or after lunch. The koliba also hosts banquets and family celebrations.
