A koliba at an estate above the Prut

Krasna Sadyba in Yaremche is one of the town’s busiest places to eat: it has almost seven and a half thousand reviews on Google Maps. It is a hotel-and-restaurant complex open since 2002, and the heart of its food offer is a large koliba seating 100–150 guests. Around it is a spacious grounds with gazebos, a fire pit (vatra), a playground and access to the river, with a banya on the bank. People come both for lunch after a walk around town and to spend a whole evening by the fire.

Unlike the tourist cafés on the main street, Krasna Sadyba sits a little apart, closer to the Prut, and feels like a large family estate. Hotel guests have a separate restaurant, but for travellers the koliba with its own menu is the most interesting part.

What to try

The koliba menu has a dedicated “Local dishes” section — the place to start exploring Prykarpattia cooking:

  • Banosh with brynza — topped with cracklings or forest mushrooms in sour cream.
  • Zakarpattia bograch with beef — spicy and hearty.
  • Mushroom soup with homemade noodles, pork borscht with smoked pear, bean soup with veal, sauerkraut soup with smoked ribs.
  • Yavoriv pie with veal, Prykarpattia holubtsi (cabbage rolls), blood sausage with stewed cabbage, and “grandma’s pot” with meat and forest mushrooms.
  • Paliushky (potato dumplings) with forest mushrooms and potato pancakes with mushrooms or meat.
  • Trout — grilled, or lightly cured as a starter; plus a set of Hutsul spreads and a “mushroom meadow” of Carpathian mushrooms.
  • Sweet things — cherry or bilberry varenyky, pine-cone pie and walnut wafers.

The drinks list deserves a look for its homemade infusions and liqueurs: “Hutsul Tear” on birch sap, herbal bodrivka, cedar, galangal, pine-cone, horseradish, nettle and berry liqueurs. Hot drinks include pine-cone tea, sea-buckthorn tea and Carpathian honey. Below is a sample of menu prices — please check current prices at the restaurant.

Fire pit, banya and the riverside

Krasna Sadyba works well for groups and families: the grounds have gazebos, a fire pit, a playground and access to the Prut, and for a Carpathian-style steam there is a banya on the riverbank plus a sauna. The koliba also hosts banquets and celebrations. In video reviews travellers single out the koliba and its meals as a reason to stop in Yaremche.
