Carpathian National Park Enclosure Farm, Yaremche

Yaremche, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

The Enclosure Farm of the Carpathian National Nature Park is a small wildlife park on the edge of Yaremche where you can see animals of the Carpathian forests up close. It was set up in 1992 to protect and breed the park’s hoofed animals, above all the red deer, whose natural population in Ukraine survives only in the Carpathians. Today it is one of the best-known family spots in the Yaremche area, rated 4.4 on Google Maps from more than 2,400 reviews. Locals and visitors usually just call it “the zvirynets” (the animal park).

What animals you can see

The farm covers about 5.3 hectares of forest and meadows. Spacious enclosures hold red deer, wild boar and domestic sheep, while the aviary houses silver, golden and common pheasants, peacocks and fancy pigeons. White swans and wild ducks swim on the pond, and you may spot coypus nearby. Every enclosure has a sign in Ukrainian and English with a short description of the animal. The grounds also host a rehabilitation centre for wild animals and birds that takes in injured or orphaned forest creatures.

For children it is a rare chance to look at a deer from just a few metres away, compare a stag with huge antlers to a hind, watch wild boar rooting in the soil and talk about why these animals deserve protection in the wild. A visit is also a small way to support the Carpathian National Nature Park, the oldest national park in Ukraine.

Things to do with children

The animal park is a good choice for a short walk with little ones: you can see it all in about an hour, the paths are level and you are surrounded by forest and fresh air. Children love feeding the animals most of all: special feed — grain, apples, carrots or cabbage — is sold at the entrance, and the deer happily come up to the fence. Keep in mind that some animals must not be fed, so give only the feed sold on site and keep your hands outside the fence. Next to the enclosures there is the “Bear Trail”, a sensory path you can walk barefoot, as well as gazebos and a playground. Some animals are shy and hide at the back of their enclosures, so mornings, when they are more active, are the best time to come.
