Rope jumping at Probiy waterfall, Yaremche

Yaremche, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

Rope jumping at the Probiy waterfall is the loudest adrenaline thrill in Yaremche. The Active Day team runs jumps right above the rocky canyon of the Prut, a few dozen metres from the Carpathians’ most famous waterfall. It is rated 4.9 on Google Maps from more than two hundred reviews: guests praise the instructors, the sense of safety and emotions they call “impossible to describe”. Rope jumping in Yaremche has been running at least since the mid-2010s, and thousands of people have jumped here.

What rope jumping is

Unlike bungee jumping, where you hang on an elastic cord, rope jumping uses climbing rope and a belay system anchored between supports. You step off the platform, free-fall for a few seconds, and then the rope smoothly turns the fall into a wide pendulum swing above the river. After the jump, the instructors lower you down. Before the start everyone gets a harness and helmet and a briefing, the gear is checked, and experienced instructors supervise the whole process.

What else you can try

  • A jump above the Prut canyon — the main thrill, with views of the Probiy waterfall and the rushing river below;
  • a zip-line crossing — a ride on a cable over the river (check availability and conditions on site);
  • a suspension footbridge over the Prut with views into the canyon;
  • photos and video of your jump — many guests film their flight as a keepsake.

Who it suits

Rope jumping is for teenagers and adults who want to test themselves and step out of their comfort zone. Visitors admit that the scariest part is walking up to the edge, while the jump itself lasts seconds and gives a huge rush. Age, weight and health limits are set by the operator; jumping is usually not recommended for people with heart, blood-pressure or spinal problems or for pregnant women — be sure to check the conditions in advance. For younger children it is more of a show: the jumps are easy to watch from the bridge above the waterfall.

How to prepare for the jump

It is best to come in the first half of the day, when there are fewer people and you will not wait long for your turn. Do not jump on an empty stomach or straight after a heavy meal, nor after alcohol — instructors usually do not allow such participants to jump. Glasses, earrings, watches and phones are better left below or securely fastened. If you want a video of your jump, ask friends to film from the bridge above the waterfall or check with the instructors whether an action camera can be mounted. Above all, trust the instructors and follow all their commands — then those few seconds of flight above the Prut will leave nothing but vivid memories.
