The rock got its name due to its unusual appearance. It is formed by chalky flysch rocks. This is a type of marine rock of debris origin. They are not covered with forest and from a distance resemble the skin of an elephant. The rock is located at the foot of one of the highest peaks in the area - Mount Makovytsia (984.5 m).

There is a well-developed infrastructure near the Elephant, with recreation centers and hotels, small cafes and dining rooms. Every tourist has the opportunity to enjoy the extraordinary views of the unique natural pearl of the Ukrainian Carpathians.
