Kosiv & Yavoriv Hutsul Crafts Tour from Yaremche

Yaremche, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

Hutsul crafts in a single day

If you are staying in Yaremche or Bukovel and want to see the real craft heartland of the Hutsul region, not just the mountain views, a handy option is a day tour to Kosiv and Yavoriv. The Yaremche agency Karpaty Travel takes guests to two of the best-known craft centres of Pokuttia and the Hutsul region: Kosiv, famous for its ceramics and market, and Yavoriv, the recognised capital of lizhnyk weaving.

The tour combines market shopping with hands-on masterclasses, so you bring home not only purchases but also something you made yourself.

Itinerary

  • 6:00 — departure from Yaremche. The road runs via Kolomyia and the Carpathian foothills.
  • Kosiv market. One of the best-known markets in the Carpathians: embroidered shirts, ceramics, lizhnyks, jewellery and Hutsul treats from local makers.
  • Pottery café and masterclass. Try the potter's wheel and make your own keepsake; breakfast is available on site.
  • Yavoriv — lizhnyk weaving masterclass. The secrets of lizhnyk making, the weaving process and a chance to work with wool yourself.
  • An exhibition and sale of Hutsul souvenirs.
  • About 15:00 — return to Yaremche.

Why Kosiv and Yavoriv

For more than two centuries Kosiv has been a leading pottery centre of the Hutsul region: its painted ceramics, decorated in yellow, green and brown, are inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Kosiv market is a living craft fair where makers from the surrounding villages bring embroidered shirts, beadwork, decorative axes, ceramics and woollens.

Yavoriv is a mountain village where lizhnyk weaving is a family business in almost every household. Lizhnyks are woven from sheep's wool on a loom and then fulled in a valylo under a stream of cold water. The patterns of Yavoriv blankets and rugs are recognised far beyond the Carpathians.

Who it suits

The tour is designed for travellers without a car or who would rather not spend the day hunting for workshops on their own. It suits families with older children, groups of friends and anyone looking for authentic Carpathian gifts — a lizhnyk, ceramics or an embroidered shirt — bought directly from the makers rather than from souvenir stalls.

Practical information

  • Price: from UAH 1,200 per adult, including a guide and transport. Not included: entry tickets, recreation fees and personal expenses; ask about masterclass costs when booking.
  • Group: up to 25 participants.
  • Schedule: daily according to the website; the Kosiv market is busiest and most varied on Saturdays, so agree the date with the manager.
  • Booking: at karpatytravel.net or by phone +38 050 712 38 66, +38 068 765 27 35, +38 098 942 85 40 (Mon–Fri 9:00–19:00, Sat–Sun 9:00–17:00).
  • What to bring: comfortable shoes, cash for the market and a bag for souvenirs.

Please confirm by phone before your trip.

Departure point

The tour starts in Yaremche; the agency's office is at 268 Svobody St. Ask when booking about the exact pick-up point and whether pick-ups are possible in other villages (for example on the way from Bukovel or Mykulychyn). The drive takes about two hours each way.

Good to know

This is a combined tour rather than a single venue: the masterclasses and specific workshops may vary with the season and day of the week. If you travel by car, you can visit the same places — Kosiv, Yavoriv and the Sheshory waterfalls — on your own and arrange masterclasses directly with the craftspeople.
