Liptovský Ján is a village in the Liptovský Mikuláš District, Žilina region, Slovakia. It lies at an elevation of 635 metres in the Liptov region, at the foot of the Low Tatras mountains. Several streams, including Štiavnica, Biela, Bystrá, Ludárov potok, and Stanišovský potok, flow through the village, creating a picturesque natural setting. The location provides access to mountain trails and natural attractions of the area.
The first written mention of Liptovský Ján dates back to 1327. Over the centuries, the village belonged to various administrative units, including Liptó County in the Kingdom of Hungary, and from 1918, to Czechoslovakia. The village’s name has changed several times, with the current form established in 1960.
Liptovský Ján is known for its numerous mineral and thermal springs, the most popular being the Teplica (Kaďa) spring. The waters are used for drinking and bathing, and thermal pools are open to the public. The village is also famous for its architectural heritage, including the Gothic Church of St. John the Baptist and a group of Renaissance manor houses and estates.
Visitors can relax at the TERMAL raj thermal swimming pool in Liptovský Ján or visit the Tatralandia aquapark. There are many hiking trails, such as the Tatranská magistrála: Na Tokarinách – Podbanské, and peaks like Baranec, Chopok, and Ďumbier. Notable sights include the Demänovská Cave of Liberty, the Museum of the Liptov Village in Pribylina, and the Vajskovský Waterfall. Those interested in local traditions can visit the Liptovar Brewery in Liptovský Mikuláš or the Koliba Strachanovka in the Jánska Valley. Mountain huts such as Chata Červenec, Kamenná chata pod Chopkom, and Žiarska chata are available for overnight stays.
