Farma Východná — organic farm below the Tatras

Východná 465, 032 32 Východná, Slovakia

Farma Východná is the highest-lying organic farm in Liptov, at 930 m in the village of Východná right below the Tatras. Cows and sheep are kept here for milk, medicinal herbs and berries are grown, the farm makes its own cheeses, and since 2016 it has opened its doors to visitors. It is a rare chance to see a real modern dairy farm from the inside — from the feed store to the calf nursery — and to taste cheese right where it was made.

The farm was founded on 13 March 1958 as a collective farm. Under socialism it relied on state subsidies and tried its hand at all sorts of things, from potatoes and flax to teaching aids, toys and spare parts. After 1989 the cooperative was close to bankruptcy until, in 2008, a British family investor bought it; the management stayed Slovak. In 2010 the farm gained organic certification, since 2012 it has grown herbs and since 2017 it has produced its own loose-leaf teas. According to the farm, it now has 1,511 ha of meadows and fields, 24 ha of medicinal herbs, 12 ha of orchards, around 820 cows, 26 Highland cattle, 90 sheep and 13 horses.

What to see and do

  • Farm tour (about 1 h 15 min). Visitors put on hygienic coats and overshoes and are then taken around the farmyard: the feed store, where you can dig into heaps of grain and sunflower seeds; the milking parlour, where a herd of more than 800 cows is milked (live milking between 12:00 and 15:00); the maternity section; the modern “Hotel of Happy Cows” barn with a robot that pushes the feed; and the calf nursery, where new calves arrive almost every day. A visit to the sheepfold is optional.
  • Cheese and tasting. At the end there is a short film about cheese-making; cheeses can be tasted and bought at discounted prices. A separate cheese tasting must be ordered in advance.
  • “Basket of experiences” — extra fun for the whole family: axe and pitchfork throwing, slingshots, feeding the sheep and refreshments.
  • Humno farm shop with a small tea room: fresh cheeses, BIOTATRY organic herbal teas, coffee, plus hand-woven Východná rugs and woodcarvings by local craftspeople.
  • Herb plantation. Tours of the herbal tea production are offered separately.

Practical information

Getting there. The farm stands on the edge of Východná (Východná 465) in upper Liptov, by the D1 motorway between Liptovský Hrádok and Štrba. A car is the easiest option.

When. Open all year. In July and August there are regular tours at 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00 (per the farm’s website; the Liptov tourism portal lists 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00). From September to June entry is at 13:00 and must be booked at least a day ahead (three days for English) online, by phone or by e-mail. Humno shop: Mon–Fri 8:00–15:30, closed at weekends and on public holidays.

Prices (summer season 2026): adult €9.50, children, students and seniors €7.90, with the Liptov Region Card €7.50, schools €6.90 (teachers free). Cheese tasting: €15 for 2 people, €25 for 4, €30 for 6.

The tour suits small children too: more time is spent with the calves for them. Keep in mind that this is a working farm — comfortable shoes help.
