Liptov saved from the water

The Museum of the Liptov Village (Múzeum liptovskej dediny) lies beyond the village of Pribylina on the road to Podbanské, right below the High Tatras. It is part of the Liptov Museum in Ružomberok, and unlike other open-air museums it recreates not an ordinary village but a medieval market town with the privileges and rights of small towns.

The museum's story is linked to a drama: in 1964 the government decided to build the Liptovská Mara reservoir, and from 1974 it began to fill — eventually with 360 million cubic metres of water. Liptovská Mara, Parížovce, Sokolče, Paludza, Dechtáre, Liptovská Sielnica and other villages — the most developed part of Liptov — disappeared fully or partly under water. The most valuable monuments were to be saved: the wooden articular church from Paludza was moved to Svätý Kríž, and the rest came here. The foundation stone was laid in 1972, construction took more than 20 years, and the museum opened to visitors in 1991. The buildings are mostly copies of the originals with many genuine elements.

What to see

  • The early-Gothic Church of the Virgin Mary from Liptovská Mara — the village whose name the reservoir now bears — with fragments of 14th–15th-century wall paintings.
  • The Gothic-Renaissance manor house from Parížovce (14th–16th century) — the oldest surviving noble residence in Liptov, associated with King Matthias Corvinus and his son John Corvinus, Prince of Liptov.
  • The gentry manor from Paludza and homes of various social groups: a landless herdsman, middle and wealthy farmers, a craftsman, the village mayor, plus a village school and a fire station from Jalovec.
  • The Považie Forest Railway — a static display of narrow-gauge wagons that ran through the Čierny Váh valley from the First World War until 1972, and since 2020 a historic train for visitors.

The museum keeps sheep, goats and horses, and in summer folk groups perform, customs are re-enacted and folk artists work on site, selling their crafts. The house interiors are open to explore freely, with a sign on each house in Slovak, English, German and Polish. Guided tours of the manor and church last about 45 minutes and start in front of the manor.
