Pniv Castle
Pniv Castle is one of the unique historical monuments of Ukraine. Throughout its history, it has played an important role in the events that took place in the lands of Prykarpattia. Pniv Castle is the most memorable building of all Nadvirna places. This is a building where the past confronts the present, where the spirit of history lives within the walls, absorbing the legends and mystery of not only Pniv Castle but the entire village of Pniv. Pniv Castle has come a long and difficult way from the past to the present, and partially managed to preserve its power and immobility.
The Pniv Castle appeared here during the decline of the Galicia-Volyn principality. Polish magnates, taking advantage of this, began to actively seize the lands of Prykarpattia. Thus (in the 16th century) at the foot of Stargora appeared Pniv Castle. It was built by Polish feudal lords of Hungarian origin - the Kuropatvos. The castle performed several important functions at the same time .
The origin of the local settlement Nadvirna is associated with its appearance. The castle was located in a very convenient place. One of the largest trade routes passed through it. A little later, a customs office was established here. This place began to attract merchants and craftsmen who settled near the castle. Some servants of the fortress also began to live in the settlement.
At that time, Pniv Castle was the most fortified structure on the territory of Ukraine. It performed a defensive function, everything was thought out to the smallest detail. The thick walls were connected by strong tall towers, which slightly protruded from the common feature of the structure. This made it easy to view and fire all directions leading to the castle. The entrance was guarded by a huge artificial moat with water. On the other hand, the castle was reliably guarded by mountain cliffs. The walls of the castle were made of gray hewn stone, with red brick used in some places. The castle has repeatedly experienced heavy sieges by Cossacks and Turks.
In the 19th century, after a series of destructions, the castle lost its original significance. The locals began to tear down the castle walls for building materials. To this day, only the northern wall of the castle is well preserved. It still has traces of the original plaster of the building. Several towers remain standing, and the underground casemates have been preserved. It is very interesting and fascinating to explore history with the help of such living aids of the past.
