Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Nadvirna
The earliest mention of the Nadvirna church dates back to 1644. At that time the church was called the Church of the Nativity. 36 years later, there were already two churches in the town, and at the beginning of the XVIII century, three churches were noted.
The current wooden church of the Intercession of theBlessed Virgin Mary was built by master Mykhailo Momot in 1835. It was dedicated in 1840. It was a branch of the parish church of the Annunciation in Nadvirna. After 1989, the church was rededicated by the UGCC community to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The exterior was completely renovated, probably in the second half of the 2010s.
Few people know that this church originated in the village of Manyava, where it was the main monastery church and was called the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. But after the closure of the Maniava monastery in 1785, it was dismantled and moved to Nadvirna, where it was rebuilt in 1793 and since then has been called the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The church underwent two more changes. In 1840 it was slightly rebuilt. During the First World War, the church burned down. Soon the church was restored, giving it its original appearance. The wooden church with a pitched roof covered with metal and a large dome is an example of Hutsul folk architecture.
During the First World War in 1914, the church burned down, but was later restored in its original form. In 1930, for unknown reasons, the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was returned to its original name, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
This building serves as a unique example of Hutsul folk architecture and therefore has historical value. For a long time, it has been meeting the spiritual needs of the locals, and now it is being reconstructed again.
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross belongs to the UGCC and is open to parishioners.
