Karpatski Delikatesy farm shop, Yaremche

Yaremche, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

Karpatski Delikatesy (“Carpathian Delicacies”) is one of the largest shops of local products in Yaremche, right on the main road through town at 59/2 Svobody Street. The modern building with wooden gables and a green sign stands in a small shopping courtyard with a few other shops and a café. The owners stress that theirs is almost the only shop in the region gathering more than 1,500 lines of farm, craft and organic goods from the Carpathians under one roof — and once inside, that is easy to believe.

Why stop by

It is a handy place to buy gifts for the whole family in one go at the end of a Carpathian trip, instead of hunting for cheese in one village, honey in another and mushrooms in a third. The shop is open every day from eight in the morning until eight at night, so you can call in on the way to Bukovel or Vorokhta in the morning or on your way home in the evening. Cheese counters, round racks of dried mushrooms and walls of jam jars and liqueur bottles create the feel of a real mountain larder. If something did not fit in the boot, you can order it for delivery by Nova Poshta anywhere in Ukraine.

What to buy

  • Cheese — Hutsul brynza, budz, vurda, smoked “horse” and braided cheeses.
  • Mushrooms — dried porcini, pickled honey fungus and chanterelles.
  • Honey and sweets — mountain honey, pine-cone jam, bilberry and blackberry jams, dried berries.
  • Meat delicacies — home-made sausages, smoked meats, salo.
  • Drinks — fruit liqueurs, herbal tinctures, Transcarpathian wines, Carpathian herbal teas.
  • Textiles — woollen socks and slippers, lizhnyky blankets, cushions with Carpathian patterns.

Flavours of a Hutsul larder

Hutsul cuisine grew out of life on the mountain pastures: in summer shepherds made brynza and budz on the polonyna meadows, while village families dried mushrooms, picked bilberries and medicinal herbs and smoked meat for the winter. Most of what you see on the shelves continues that tradition. A tip for shoppers: real sheep’s-milk brynza has a distinct, slightly sharp taste, and smoked cheeses are the best choice for the road because they keep longer.

Keeping and transporting your purchases

Most cheeses, especially fresh brynza and budz, should travel in a cool bag and be eaten within a few days; smoked cheeses and sausages cope with the journey much better. Keep dried mushrooms in a dry place in a linen bag or glass jar, and honey and jam away from sunlight. Ask the staff to wrap jars in paper or bubble wrap if you have a long train ride ahead. Do not hesitate to ask where exactly a product comes from and who made it — the shop stocks many goods from specific family farms of Prykarpattia.
