Mount Stara
Stara is a 1,472 m summit in the Svydovets range, in the Rakhiv district of Zakarpattia Oblast. It lies on the long pasture ridge carrying the popular ascent from Rakhiv to Blyznytsia (1,883 m), about 5 km to the north-east. The nearest villages are Trostianets (about 5 km) and Kvasy (about 6.5 km); Bilyn is about 8.7 km away and Rakhiv 14 km.
The ridge here is broad and treeless. About 1.6 km north of Stara lies Pereslup (1,452 m), 1.9 km to the south Bilynska (1,422 m), and 2.7 km to the north-east the ridge rises to Mala Blyznytsia (1,566 m). West of the summit is the Staryi pasture with a hut.
How to get there
13 of our routes cross Stara or pass within 300 m of it. The shortest ascent from Kvasy is Kvasy – Mount Pereslip (10.2 km, about 990 m of ascent). Classic routes from Rakhiv are Rakhiv – Mount Blyznytsia (18.8 km) and Rakhiv – Blyznytsia (23.2 km); both follow the ridge over the summit. A loop option is Kvasy – Stara – Blyznytsia – Lake Ivor – Kvasy (25.8 km, about 1,830 m of ascent). To cross the whole of Svydovets take Rakhiv – Blyznytsia – Unhariaska – Tempa – Ust-Chorna (63 km).
Water, shelter and safety
On our map the nearest springs lie about 620–700 m from the summit to the west, north and north-east (at 1,330–1,360 m); one of them is weak and seasonal, the others’ condition is unknown. A hut on the Staryi pasture stands about 840 m to the west, and a working hut on the Zasovy pasture about 1.5 km to the south-east. Two drinking-water points are marked about 1.4–1.5 km to the north-east. The ridge is exposed to wind and thunderstorms, and in fog it is easy to lose the path on the broad pasture. The nearest summit with our forecast is the weather on Blyznytsia (about 5 km). In an emergency call 112 or 101 — contacts of the nearest units are on our mountain rescue page.
