U Rizbaria Café, Yasinia

Yasinia, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine

U Rizbaria Café (“At the Woodcarver’s”) in Yasinia is a small Hutsul place serving home cooking that travellers usually find by word of mouth. The name is no accident: everything inside breathes wood and handwork. Log walls, heavy tables and benches with carved backs, chairs and tables built on old cartwheels, woven runners on the tabletops, painted plates and earthenware on the shelves — and in the middle of the room a large stove painted in bright Hutsul ornament with fir trees and deer. The walls are hung with paintings of mountain life. This is not “ethno” styling for tourists but a cosy house where it is good to warm up after a drive or a hike.

Atmosphere and character

U Rizbaria has no pretensions: a few small rooms, quiet music and homely serving. Guests unanimously praise the friendly staff and the feeling of being welcomed into someone’s home rather than a restaurant. The owners reply to every review and keep inviting guests “until we meet in the new season”, so opening hours may change with the season — keep that in mind when planning. The café works in the daytime, from morning till evening, which makes it a good choice for breakfast before heading up to Drahobrat or the Svydovets ridge, or for lunch after coming down from the mountains.

What to try: “the tastiest bograch in Yasinia”

The dish people come back for is bograch. Visitors describe it as the real Transcarpathian version — spicy, thick, with big pieces of lightly smoked meat — and rate it above the more expensive restaurants in town. The second pride of the house is banosh, cornmeal porridge cooked in sour cream and traditionally served in the mountains with bryndza sheep’s cheese and cracklings. The menu also includes deruny (potato pancakes), borshch, varenyky dumplings and, for breakfast, syrnyky cottage-cheese pancakes. Wash it down with Carpathian herbal tea or, in winter, something hot.

Prices are moderate: according to one guest, banosh, syrnyky and herbal tea together came to about UAH 220. We could not find a published menu with prices, so please check current prices and dishes on site.

Experiences: the interior is a reason to stop

Besides the food, U Rizbaria is worth a visit for the interior itself — a good chance to see what a well-to-do Hutsul house might have looked like: a painted stove, woven blankets and runners, painted tableware and handmade wooden furniture. Take a photo of the stove and the cartwheel tables — details you rarely see in an ordinary café. The café does not advertise shows or masterclasses; its strength is the calm, homely atmosphere and good food.
