Vysokyi Pereval Koliba, Yablunytsia

Yablunytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

Vysokyi Pereval Koliba ("High Pass") stands in Yablunytsia, on the new road to Bukovel, in the Horishkiv area. The wooden koliba was built in the traditional Hutsul style: its steep, spired roof echoes the surrounding peaks, while inside you find massive timber beams, a wrought-iron chandelier, Hutsul costume and old objects in the interior. The real highlight is the view: the windows and terrace look out over Hoverla, Petros and the Svydovets ridge. The place calls itself an ethno restaurant of Hutsul cuisine, and it is one of those spots people visit not only to eat but to sit with a view of Ukraine's highest mountains.

On Google Maps the koliba is rated 4.7 from almost 2,700 reviews; guests most often praise the views, generous portions, home-style cooking and friendly staff.

What to try

The menu is built around Hutsul and wider Ukrainian home cooking, with some dishes made in the oven and on an open-fire grill. Worth trying:

  • banosh with bryndza and mushrooms – cornmeal porridge cooked in cream, a Hutsul classic;
  • bograch from grandma's recipe – a thick, spicy meat soup;
  • rye varenyky with highland vurda cheese, bacon and machanka sauce;
  • Hutsul cabbage rolls made with sauerkraut and svizhyna (fresh pork with liver), cooked in the oven;
  • paliushky – potato dumplings with mushroom sauce in a clay pot;
  • potato pancakes in pots, home-made blood sausage, porcini soup with home-made noodles;
  • grilled trout with herbs and cheese figurines (konyky).

For groups there are large sharing sets, such as the "Opryshok's hearty lunch" for four, and for dessert blueberry varenyky, baked apple with honey or blueberry tart. There is also a separate children's menu, plus a bar and a wine list. Hutsul cuisine grew out of the simple produce of a mountain household – cornmeal, milk and cheese from the highland pastures, mushrooms, berries and pork – so banosh, vurda, bryndza and forest mushrooms are not exotic here but the basis of the table. That is why it is best to order what you would not find in an ordinary city restaurant. Sample prices from the menu below; please check current prices at the restaurant.

Atmosphere and experiences

The koliba's calling card is live Hutsul music: a folk trio plays for guests, so lunch easily turns into a small celebration. The koliba hosts weddings, anniversaries, christenings and children's parties, and caters for large groups of 50 to 200 people with a dedicated menu booked in advance. In winter, with everything covered in snow, it is especially cosy by the fire; in summer the best seats are on the terrace facing the Chornohora range.
