DU-MEN craft bakery, Rakhiv

Rakhiv, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine

DU-MEN (DU•MEN.craft bakery) is a craft bakery in Rakhiv which, in its own words, has been baking “bread with a history” for twelve years. It belongs to the local family group DUMEN, best known in town for its supermarket of the same name, and every morning its branded vans deliver fresh bread around Rakhiv. The range includes sourdough bread with a crisp crust, braided kalach loaves, buns and sweet yeast baking, and there is coffee to take away at the counter. The brand is listed among Zakarpattia’s craft producers on the region’s official tourism portal.

Why drop in

Rakhiv is the main base for hikes on Chornohora, Svydovets and the Maramureș mountains, and everyone needs bread before setting off. DU-MEN is a practical place to buy a fresh loaf for your rucksack, a kalach or bun for breakfast and a coffee for the road. There are no production tours: this is simply where you come for bread and pastries. What came out of the oven today is usually shown on the bakery’s Instagram (dumen.bakery), which also shows the baking process.

What to try and buy

  • Sourdough bread — round and long loaves with a crisp crust that keep well for several days on a hike.
  • Kalach and braided sweet breads — festive baking that Hutsul families have long made for big holidays.
  • Buns, sweet pastries and coffee — for breakfast or a snack before the road.

In the mountains bread has always mattered: grain grew poorly on Hutsul slopes, so flour was brought up from the valleys, and kalach and palianytsia loaves were baked with special care and served on feast days. A fresh Rakhiv loaf with brynza cheese from a mountain pasture is still the classic Hutsul hiker’s lunch, with no better substitute.

If you are staying in Rakhiv for a few days, the bakery is an easy way to have fresh pastries for breakfast at your guesthouse or flat every morning, and a kalach or loaf also makes a nice gift for the hosts of the homestead where you stay.

Getting there

Myru Street is Rakhiv’s main street running along the Tysa, and both sales points are right on it, so the bakery is easy to find on foot or by car. Rakhiv lies in the upper Tysa valley on the Mukachevo–Rakhiv–Vorokhta road; trains run here from Uzhhorod, Lviv and Kyiv, and buses from Ivano-Frankivsk and Uzhhorod.
