Kremnica is a town in the Žiar nad Hronom District, Banská Bystrica Region, Slovakia. It is located in central Slovakia at the foot of the Kremnica Mountains, part of the Slovak Central Mountains. The town sits at about 550 metres above sea level, with the Skalka river running through its surroundings.

Kremnica has a rich mining and minting history. The first written mention of the town dates back to 1328, when it was granted royal privileges and became a royal mining town with its own mint. It was a major centre for gold and silver extraction and joined the union of seven principal mining towns of the Kingdom of Hungary. The last gold was mined here in 1970.

Kremnica is known for its well-preserved medieval monuments, including the Town Castle and historic fortifications. The town hosts the world’s oldest continuously operating mint, which has produced gold ducats since the 14th century. Medal-making and traditional crafts, such as gingerbread, have also flourished here.

Visitors can explore the Museum of Coins and Medals in Kremnica and the Town Castle. Hiking enthusiasts can follow the “Kremnica – Skalka, recreation centre” trail or sample Kremnica’s gingerbread, made by the Gaurík family bakery since 1922. The region offers over 20 hiking routes leading to scenic peaks and passes of the Kremnica Mountains.
