ÚĽUV Banská Bystrica: folk-craft shop and craft school

Dolná 14, 974 01 Banská Bystrica, Slovakia

Where to find genuine Slovak craft

ÚĽUV (Ústredie ľudovej umeleckej výroby, the Centre for Folk Art Production) is a state institution that has looked after Slovak folk crafts since 1945: it keeps a register of makers, checks the quality of their work, publishes books and a magazine, sells craftspeople’s work and teaches anyone who wants to learn. The Regional Craft Centre in Banská Bystrica was founded in 2005 as a hub for all of Central Slovakia, with its own circle of art advisers and craft tutors from the region.

The centre is right in the heart of town on pedestrian Dolná street, in a restored burgher’s house from the first third of the 16th century. Under one roof it combines a folk-craft shop, a specialist library and the workshops of the ÚĽUV Craft School. The Craft School itself has been included by UNESCO in the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices of intangible cultural heritage.

Why go

  • Buy the real thing. The shop sells items that have passed ÚĽUV’s art board: ceramics, carved wood, wirework (Slovak drotárstvo, the craft of weaving with wire), woven runners and tablecloths, embroidery, lace, glass painting and toys. It is a guarantee of handwork by a living maker, not a factory souvenir.
  • Learn a craft. The Craft School runs all year: pottery, wirework, loom weaving, woodcarving, glass painting, felting, willow weaving, leatherwork, gingerbread and beeswax candles. There are short courses of a few hours, longer cycles and individual or two-person lessons.
  • For children in summer. In July and August the centre runs week-long “Holidays with a Craft” sessions for children aged 8 to 15.
  • For groups. Schools and groups can book a tour of the centre with craft demonstrations or a creative workshop where everyone makes a small item.

What to buy and learn

The November–December 2026 schedule shows the range well: glass painting with a nativity motif (€70), a wooden salt cellar (€100), loom weaving (€175), the potter’s wheel (€75), a basket of fresh willow (€100), a wire basket (€80), a felted handbag (€100), a leather belt, gingerbread and beeswax candles (€50–60 each) and Christmas decorations of wire and wood (€50). Groups usually have up to six participants, so the tutor has time for everyone. An individual or two-person wirework course can be arranged for any date from August 2026 to the end of June 2027. For Christmas presents the shop offers wire and wooden ornaments, painted gingerbread and ceramics.
