Harmanecká Cave
The “White Cave” above the Harmanec valley
Harmanecká Cave (Harmanecká jaskyňa) lies in the valley of the Harmanec stream north-west of Banská Bystrica, in the southern part of the Great Fatra (Veľká Fatra) range. The entrance is on the northern slope of Kotolnica hill at 821 m, 260 m above the valley floor. It is also called the White Cave because of the thick layer of pure limestone above it and the abundance of soft white flowstone (moonmilk) covering its walls.
The passages formed in dark grey Triassic limestone along tectonic faults: at first they were dissolved by slow, almost stagnant water, and later the spaces were enlarged by collapsing ceilings and walls. The cave is 3,123 m long with a vertical range of about 75 m. The largest halls are the Pagoda Dome, the High Dome and the Wandering Dome. In the Great Dome stand two pagoda-shaped stalagmites 12 m high and 3 m in diameter. The cave is one of the most important bat sites in Slovakia: 11 species have been recorded, and colonies of greater and lesser mouse-eared bats sometimes number 1,000–1,500 animals.
The entrance shaft-like hall called Izbica had long served woodcutters as a shelter in bad weather. In 1932, 18-year-old Michal Bacúrik spent 14 days digging through a narrow passage and broke into the snow-white Discoverer’s Hall. Curiously, he was fined for it, because he had entered the town forest land without permission. Banská Bystrica town council closed the cave in 1933 to protect its formations, and in 1938 explorers found the Pagoda Dome and the Wandering Dome. During the Second World War, in 1944, the cave served as a refuge for local people, and it was first opened to tourists in 1950.
What to see
The tour takes about 60 minutes and the route is 1,020 m long. The highlights are white flowstone cascades and curtains on the walls, flowstone pools and massive pagoda-shaped stalagmites. The temperature is 5.8–6.4 °C with 94–97 % humidity, so after the warm climb you will need a jumper or jacket. Guides remind visitors not to photograph the bats at close range, as even the presence of people disturbs them.
Practical information
The visitor car park is beside the Harmanec – Turčianske Teplice road. It is 13 km from Banská Bystrica towards Martin, 20 km from Turčianske Teplice over the Šturec pass and 50 km from Ružomberok via Donovaly. Parking is charged in July–August. The nearest bus stop is “Harmanec, Horný Harmanec, jaskyňa”.
A 1,420 m zigzag path with information boards climbs 260 m to the entrance; the ascent takes about 40 minutes. It is an ordinary forest path, so you need comfortable shoes and a little stamina; it is not passable with a pushchair. The cave is open from 1 May to 31 October, Tuesday to Sunday, with a guide only. Prices in 2026: adults €10, children aged 4–15 €5, students and over-60s €9; photography without tripod or flash is free. A scheduled tour runs with at least 4 visitors and bookings are not taken, so allow for the climb and reach the entrance in good time.
Nearby
After the cave, drive east to Ľupča Castle above Slovenská Ľupča. Further on, on the southern side of the Low Tatras, you will find the almost level Bystrianska Cave and the Čierny Hron Forest Railway with the Vydrovo forestry open-air museum.
