Blatnica Castle and the Gader Valley

Gaderská dolina, 038 15 Blatnica, Slovakia

A sentinel above an old road

Blatnica Castle (Blatnický hrad) is a medieval ruin on the low but sharp limestone ridge of Plešovica (658 m), which separates the Gader valley (Gaderská dolina) from the Turiec basin. It is about 2 km from the village of Blatnica in Martin district. The castle was built in the second half of the 13th century; the first mention dates from 1300, when it was owned by Peter of Brezovica. It was built to guard the magna via road from Nitra to the north. When a more convenient route appeared further west, via Mošovce to Martin, the old road and the castle lost their importance; kings often pledged it, and its holders mostly just used it without maintaining the walls.

In 1540 the castle passed to the Révay family, who in the second half of the 16th and early 17th centuries built a large outer bailey with new buildings. It was the centre of the Blatnica estate, which comprised 16 villages. At the end of the 17th century it was seized by Imre Thököly’s insurgents and in the early 18th century by the kuruc troops of Francis II Rákóczi. Once the uprisings subsided the castle lost its significance; it was repaired once more in 1744, but from 1790 nobody lived here and it has been slowly decaying ever since.

What to see

The best preserved part is the massive western tower with narrow arrow slits, still rising high above the forest; between it and the smaller eastern tower lie the remains of a long, narrow palace, protected on the north-east by a steep drop. Corner quoins are visible on the farm buildings of the lower castle. You can climb onto both former bastion platforms, which offer superb views over Turiec and the mouth of the Gader valley. These are unfenced ruins, so take care near the edges and with children.

The Gader valley itself is one of the most beautiful and longest valleys of the Great Fatra (Veľká Fatra): above it rise the rock walls of Tlstá, the valley holds caves, rock gates and stream cascades, and higher up, in its side branches, lies the Padva National Nature Reserve (since 1972). The valley is a convenient approach to the summits of Tlstá and Ostrá and to the main ridge — Ostredok and Krížna.

Practical information

Leave the car at the paid car park at the entrance to the Gader and Blatnica valleys on the edge of Blatnica (47 spaces, open 24/7): the first 10 minutes are free, then €1.50 for each started hour during the first four hours, and €6 per day for more than 4 hours; campervans and vehicles with trailers longer than 5.5 m are banned (rules in force from 16 July 2026). From the village a yellow-marked trail leads up the Gader valley to the ruins — about 2 km — along with a 1.8 km educational trail with five stops; the climb takes 20–30 minutes and is manageable for school-age children, but not with a pushchair. Entry to the ruins is free, with no tickets or staff.

Nearby

In Martin, visit Slovakia’s largest open-air museum, the Museum of the Slovak Village. On the southern side of the Great Fatra, near Banská Bystrica, is Harmanecká Cave, and to the north, above the Váh, Strečno Castle.
