Museum of the Slovak Village, Martin

Jahodnícke háje, 036 01 Martin, Slovakia

North-western Slovakia in one village

The Museum of the Slovak Village (Múzeum slovenskej dediny) is the largest ethnographic open-air exhibition in Slovakia. The Slovak National Museum in Martin has been building it since the second half of the 1960s in the Jahodnícke háje woodland park on the edge of town. The idea of a national open-air museum based in Martin is an old one; the first building to “move” was a bell tower from Koštany nad Turcom, transferred to the museum’s botanical garden, and the foundation stone was laid in the foundations of the inn from Oravská Polhora, dated 1811. The first sections opened in 1972, regular seasonal opening began in 1991, and today the museum is open all year.

On 15.5 hectares stand almost 150 dwellings, farm, technical, community and religious buildings from the second half of the 19th to the first half of the 20th century, from four regions: Orava, Turiec, Liptov and Kysuce–Podjavorníky. Together they show both the variety of folk building and the social differences between the wealthier lesser nobility (zemania), farmers and day labourers. Twenty-four buildings with furnished interiors are open to visitors.

What to see

  • The wooden Roman Catholic church from Rudno, 1792 — the landmark of the Turiec section in the centre of the museum.
  • The gazebo (filagória) from Slovenské Pravno with valuable board paintings of 1792.
  • The squire’s homestead from Vyšný Kubín, 1748 — one of the most interesting buildings of Orava — with granaries and a smithy from Suchá Hora nearby.
  • The reconstructed carriage house from Moškovec, a fire station from Laskár, hatter’s and cloth-maker’s workshops from Veľký Čepčín and an elementary school from Petrovice.
  • Folk festivals during the “Ethnographic Year” — from Shrovetide processions in February and Easter customs to autumn crafts; the programme is published on the museum website.

Practical information

From May to October the museum is open daily except Monday from 9:00 to 17:00, and from November to April daily except Monday and Saturday from 9:00 to 14:30; last entry is one hour before closing (as of October 2026). A standard adult ticket costs €6, children over 6, students and seniors €4, family tickets €10 or €16; on festival days prices are slightly higher (adults €7). Groups of more than 10 should book a guide at least two working days ahead (€10 per group). Dogs on a lead are welcome. The restaurant in the Oravská Polhora inn is currently closed for technical reasons, so bring water and a snack.

By car, from the centre of Martin follow Jesenského street towards Turčianske Teplice and the signposts. By city bus, ride to the terminus “Ľadoveň”, from where the museum is about a 30-minute walk. The site is large, with earth paths and slopes — allow two to three hours and wear comfortable shoes; it makes a great outing for children.

Nearby

South of Martin, in the Gader valley of the Great Fatra, stand the ruins of Blatnica Castle. To the north, above the Váh, is Strečno Castle, and beyond the Little Fatra the village of Terchová. A similar open-air museum of Orava is the Museum of the Orava Village near Zuberec.
