Museum of the Orava Village (Zuberec open-air museum)
An Orava village below the Roháče
The Museum of the Orava Village (Múzeum oravskej dediny) is an open-air museum on the Brestová meadow at about 830 m, at the foot of the Western Tatras — the Roháče. It lies 4 km from the centre of Zuberec on the road to Zverovka. The meadow used to be common pasture of Zuberec villagers, and on 24 September 1967 the foundation stone of the future museum was laid. It opened to visitors on 31 August 1975, and building work continued until the 1990s.
Most buildings are originals: they were bought in villages all over Orava, dismantled, transported and reassembled at Brestová. Those that could not be moved were rebuilt as copies. The curators wanted to show not only houses but the whole setting — yards, streets, fields and meadows that fed Orava families. The mountain stream Studená flows through the grounds and feeds a millrace for the mill and the fulling mill. Today the museum is run by the municipality of Zuberec.
What to see
The museum is divided into five parts:
- Lower Orava market square — a small marketplace with whitewashed clay-plastered houses of gentry, farmers and craftsmen, a Baroque belfry (1860) and the Meško family manor from Vyšný Kubín (1752), where, according to local memory, the poet P. O. Hviezdoslav went to school.
- Upper Orava street — dense rows of log farmsteads, including a potter's kiln and a house remodelled by its owner after working in America.
- Goral hamlets — scattered homesteads of mountain shepherds and woodcutters.
- Church with cemetery — the late-Gothic wooden Church of St Elizabeth of Hungary from Zábrež, probably built in the early 15th century, with a Renaissance painted ceiling and sanctuary paintings from 1646.
- Mill area — a water mill from Novoť (about 1890), which worked until 1953, and a fulling mill.
Old crops such as oats, rye, flax and poppy grow in the fields, and in summer you will see sheep, goats, geese and horses in the pens. Small craft shops open in summer, and folk events are held on festive days. It is a good place for families with children: compact, spacious and full of animals.
