Terchová
Jánošík’s village
Terchová is a village in northern Slovakia, in the Žilina district, between the Krivánska Malá Fatra and the Kysucká vrchovina uplands. The River Varínka flows through its centre, and the village is the natural gateway to Vrátna dolina. It is a typical scattered “kopanice” settlement: no fewer than 68 hamlets spread over the slopes belong to the municipality. The first written record dates from 1580, when Terchová belonged to the Strečno-Gbeľany estate. People worked in quarries and forests and kept sheep, and in the 19th century many emigrated to Canada, the USA, France and Argentina. In April 1945 retreating German troops burned the village.
Terchová owes its fame to one man – Juraj Jánošík (1688–1713), an outlaw and Slovak national legend whom folk memory turned into a protector of the poor, the “Slovak Robin Hood”. He was born in one of Terchová’s hamlets and executed in 1713 in Liptovský Mikuláš. The site of his family house was identified by archaeological research by Martin Benka in 1935, and in 2018 a wooden house in the outlaw’s home hamlet was opened to visitors. His image is everywhere here – in names, songs, souvenirs and even the name of the Jánošíkove diery gorges.
What to see
- The Juraj Jánošík statue – a 7.5 m sheet-metal sculpture by Ján Kulich, erected in 1988 for the 300th anniversary of the hero’s birth on a green hill above the road to Vrátna. It offers a panorama of the village and the Malá Fatra peaks.
- The “Jánošík and Terchová” exhibition of the Považie Museum (since 2008) on the first floor of the municipal office: a traditional dwelling, village history, the Jánošík legend, folklore and crafts, and a large 1955 oil painting by Ľudovít Fulla.
- The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius (1942–1949) with wooden statues of the two brothers and a stone altar carved by local stonemasons; in winter the wooden Terchová nativity scene is displayed.
- A 30 m lookout tower (2015) with three platforms and views of the village and mountains.
Terchová music and Jánošík Days
Since 2013 Terchová music has been on UNESCO’s list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The classic band is one or two lead violinists (primáš), an accompanying player (kontráš) and a bass player on a special two-string bass, the “basička”; musicians once made their instruments themselves from wooden crates, hence the playful name “box music”. Since the early 1960s Terchová has hosted the international folklore festival Jánošík Days (Jánošíkove dni) every summer; in 2026 it ran from 29 July to 2 August.
Practical information
Terchová lies on the road from Žilina to Vrátna dolina, about 3 km before the valley; buses from Žilina stop in the village centre. The exhibition opens Tuesday to Sunday 9:00–16:00 with a break 12:00–12:30; a full ticket is €5 and a visit takes about half an hour. A path leads to the statue from the Vrátna road. The village makes a handy base: there is plenty of private accommodation, and most Malá Fatra trailheads are a few minutes’ drive away.
Nearby
From Terchová it is a short hop to Jánošíkove diery and to Vrátna dolina with its cable car to Chleb. On the way to Žilina, stop at Strečno Castle and the ruins of Starý hrad above the Váh.
