Vrátna Valley

Vrátna, 013 06 Terchová (dolná stanica kabínkovej lanovky Chleb), Slovakia

The heart of the Malá Fatra

Vrátna dolina, or simply Vrátna, is a valley in the Krivánska Malá Fatra and the largest centre of summer and winter tourism in these mountains. It lies in Malá Fatra National Park, about 25 km from Žilina and 3 km from the village of Terchová. The valley is ringed by peaks: Boboty, Veľký Rozsutec, Stoh, Poludňový grúň, Chleb, Veľký Kriváň and others. The Grúň ridge (989 m) divides it into two branches, the Old and the New valley (Stará and Nová dolina).

The most spectacular part is the narrow entrance canyon of Tiesňavy, cut by the River Varínka. Dolomite rocks here form shapes with names such as the Rock Town, the Monk, the Camel and the Five Carters. These forests once belonged to the Majláth counts, who used them as hunting grounds, and the first skiers arrived in the 1920s and 1930s. During the Slovak National Uprising the mountain huts were burned; they were rebuilt after the war, and in 1950 Chata Vrátna and the first chairlift were built. In July 2014, after a cloudburst, a mud-and-rock flow came down from the Hromové slope: it buried the lower lift station, the hut and the car park and destroyed 49 cars, but no one was killed.

What to see and do

  • The Chleb gondola – eight-seat Doppelmayr cabins (since 2006) lift you in a few minutes from Chata Vrátna (744 m) to the Snilovské sedlo saddle (1,494 m). From there Chleb (1,646 m) is a 30–40-minute walk, and the ridge continues to Veľký Kriváň, the highest summit of the Malá Fatra.
  • The Tiesňavy gorge – the rocky gateway of the valley, visible from the road; fine views open from the paths above it.
  • Štefanová – a former shepherds’ settlement, start of routes to Rozsutec and to Jánošíkove diery.
  • The Paseky chairlift to Grúň and, in winter, several ski areas (Paseky, Poludňový grúň, Chleb).

Practical information

From Žilina it is about 25 km by car via Terchová; scheduled buses also run to Vrátna. Parking at the lower gondola station costs €10 per day (pay at the machine by card or coins, or via a QR code). A return gondola ticket for an adult is €24–25, a family ticket from €55. In October 2026 the gondola runs Friday to Sunday from 9:00 to 16:00 every hour, and daily during the autumn holidays (28 October – 1 November); operation depends on the weather.

Entry to the park is free, but rules apply: walk only on marked trails, from 16 April to 31 October between 6:00 and 21:00 and in winter between 7:00 and 18:00; keep dogs on a lead; cycle only on roads and marked cycle routes; bivouacking is allowed only near four mountain huts. From 1 March to 15 June the red trail Medziholie – Veľký Rozsutec – Medzirozsutce and two blue trails (Obšívanka – Malé nocľahy, Vendovka – Malý Kriváň) are closed. Families with children can take the gondola up and walk along the ridge without much climbing; weather on the crest changes quickly, so bring a windproof jacket.

Nearby

In Terchová, see the Jánošík statue and the museum. Close by are the Jánošíkove diery canyons with ladders and footbridges, and on the other side of the mountains the 38 m Šútovo waterfall. On the way back to Žilina, Strečno Castle stands above the Váh.
