Vydrovo Forestry Open-Air Museum
A forest museum in the open air
The Vydrovo Forestry Open-Air Museum (Lesnícky skanzen Vydrovo) is devoted to the forest and the work of foresters. It lies in the Vydrovo valley (Vydrovská dolina), about 1.5 km from the village of Čierny Balog in the Horehronie region. It covers 140 ha on both banks of the Vydrovský potok stream, 116 ha of which is forest, at altitudes from 525 to 850 m. It was created by the state company Lesy SR: the foundation stone was laid on 21 June 2002 and it officially opened on 19 July 2003. In 2012 the valley was declared a Significant Forestry Site of Slovakia, and new exhibits are added every year.
The museum’s main idea is to show the past, present and future of forestry not behind glass but right in the forest: traditional tools, machines and woodworking methods stand along the trail among living forest habitats. Part of the display was created by artists of the international Ekoart group, so wooden sculptures and natural installations appear among the machinery.
The valley is closely tied to the history of the narrow-gauge line, which from 1909 hauled timber out of the whole Čierny Hron basin. When enthusiasts saved the forest railway, the first restored tourist steam train ran to Vydrovo on 1 May 1992. Since then trains have stopped at Vydrovo – Skanzen station right by the museum entrance, so a train ride and a walk are easy to combine in one day.
What to see
- The Forest Time Trail (Chodník lesného času) – more than 3 km and over 80 stops with 2D and 3D exhibits; shorter variants are shown on maps at the entrance.
- A water-powered sawmill, forestry machinery, a fire cart and an old forest-railway steam locomotive.
- A replica forest chapel and a symbolic cemetery for foresters who lost their lives working in the woods.
- The “miniature world” with replicas of forestry buildings, and the trunk of the famous Dobroč fir (Dobročská jedľa).
Practical information
The most enjoyable way to arrive is by the Čierny Hron forest railway: the “green” route from Čierny Balog station to Vydrovo is 4 km long. In the 2026 season the motor train ran daily from 28 February to 15 September (provided at least six full tickets were sold), departing at 10:00, 11:00, 12:30, 13:30, 14:30 and 15:30; the return trip takes about 45 minutes and a single-route ticket costs €15. You can also come by car, bus or on foot: a nature trail laid out in 2009 leads from the village centre to the museum.
As of October 2026 Lesy SR says the museum is open to visitors at weekends and on public holidays, while on weekdays access to parts of the valley is restricted because of salvage logging after a windstorm in Horehronie. No official prices are published; tourist portals mention a symbolic fee in the summer season. A full visit takes almost a whole day; bring comfortable shoes and a raincoat, but no special gear is needed, and there are routes suitable for pushchairs. It is worth phoning before your visit (Mon–Fri 6:00–14:00).
Nearby
In Čierny Balog are the station and museum of the Čierny Hron Railway, with steam trains to Šánske and Dobroč. Further down the Hron valley are the Bystrá Cave and royal Ľupča Castle.
