Southern Carpathians
Carpații Meridionali
The Southern Carpathians, also called the Transylvanian Alps, are Romania's highest mountains: Făgăraș, Bucegi, Parâng and Retezat. Sharp ridges above 2,000 m, more than a hundred glacial lakes and rocky cirques make them the most alpine part of the Carpathians. In winter avalanches are a real risk; the mountain rescue service is Salvamont.
