Banská Bystrica is a city in central Slovakia, serving as the administrative centre of the Banská Bystrica Region and District. The city lies on the Hron River in a broad valley surrounded by the mountain ranges of the Western Carpathians: the Veľká Fatra, Low Tatras, and Kremnica Mountains. Its elevation is 362 m above sea level, and the population is over 73,000 (2025).

The area of present-day Banská Bystrica was originally a small settlement. In the 13th century, German colonists settled here, and in 1255, King Béla IV of Hungary granted it town privileges. During the Middle Ages, it became an important industrial and trading centre of the Kingdom of Hungary. In the 20th century, Banská Bystrica became a symbolic site of the Slovak anti-government uprising of 1944.

The city is known for its historical architecture, old churches, museums, and theatres. The Museum of Central Slovakia (founded in 1889) and the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising are located here. Banská Bystrica is an academic centre, home to Matej Bel University, the Academy of Arts, and a branch of the Slovak Medical University. The surrounding mountains and picturesque landscapes attract visitors year-round.

Visitors can explore the Thurzo House – Museum of Central Slovakia, visit Harmanec Cave, hike to Kráľova studňa in the Veľká Fatra, or see Ľupča Castle. For those interested in crafts, the Urpiner Brewery offers tours and fresh beer, while ÚĽUV provides a craft shop and school. Numerous hiking trails are available, such as Tajov – Skalka, Blatnica – Kráľova studňa, Staré Hory – Krížna, and Kremnička – Tri kríže.
