Mount Obavskyi Kamin
Obavskyi Kamin (the “Obava Stone”) is a 979 m summit in the Syniak massif, part of the volcanic ridge of the Ukrainian Carpathians. It rises in the Mukachevo district of Zakarpattia Oblast, where two ridges, Plishka and Tovstyi, meet. The mountain is named after the village of Obava to the south of it. The nearest settlements are Syniak, Chabyn and Dubyno.
Obavskyi Kamin towers over the western part of the basin in which the Syniak sanatorium lies. Its slopes are almost entirely covered with oak, hornbeam and beech forest, the upper slopes are steep, and the summit itself is a bare rock more than 80 m high. It offers a wide panorama of the Carpathians; to the south you can see Mukachevo Castle and a large part of the Transcarpathian Lowland.
How to get there
There is no waymarked route to Obavskyi Kamin on our site yet. The most convenient starting points are the village of Syniak with its resort, or Chabyn and Dubyno; forest roads lead up to the summit. Download an offline map before you go: it is easy to lose your bearings in the forest, and mobile coverage in the valleys can be weak.
Water, shelter and safety
Our map shows no springs or huts near the summit, so carry your own water. The easiest place to stay is Syniak or one of the neighbouring villages. The summit rock is sheer: keep away from the edge in rain, fog or ice and watch children closely. The surrounding slopes are dotted with crags, so do not leave the path to take shortcuts. In an emergency call 112 or 101; contacts of the nearest units are on our mountain rescue page.
Interesting facts
- The Syniak massif, to which Obavskyi Kamin belongs, is built of volcanic and flysch rocks; its highest summit is Dunavka (1,018 m).
- The crags scattered over the slopes around the summit make the whole area especially picturesque.
