The district is located on the banks of the Latorytsia River, into which the Vyznytsia, Obava, Syniavka, Koropetskyi Canal and a number of unnamed streams flow. The district center is Mukacheve. The relief of Mukachevo district is mountainous and lowland. In the north of the district there are spurs of the Vygorlat-Hutyn volcanic range and the foothills of the Carpathians, in the south and southwest - the Transcarpathian lowland.
The territory of Mukachevo district has been inhabited since ancient times. The district was formed around the city, which grew up near the feudal castle. According to legends, the name of the district and the city of Mukachevo comes from the word "flour". According to one legend, there was once a water mill near the castle where people ground flour. According to another legend, the commoners built the castle, suffering from suffering and torment.
In the tenth and eleventh centuries, the area was part of Kyivan Rus. In the second half of the eleventh century it was captured by Hungarian feudal lords. In 1086, Mukachevo and the district were invaded by the Polovtsians, and in 1241 the hordes of Batu Khan invaded the area. After the territory was conquered in 1281 by Prince Lev Danylovych of Galicia-Volhynia, in 1321 Mukachevo region was re-joined by Hungary. The district received its legal status for the first time in 1376, when Queen Erzsébet of Hungary presented the city of Mukachevo with a charter for the right to use its own seal to seal documents. For many centuries, the district was attacked by foreigners. It was only after going through wars and bloodshed that the territory was annexed to Soviet Ukraine in 1944. Mukachevo district was formed as an administrative unit in 1946.
There are 62 major mineral water deposits in the Zakarpattia region, of which 39 out of 207 in Ukraine as a whole are represented in the Cadastre of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, which is 18.8%.

- Skakalo is a waterfall (4 m high) in the Ukrainian Carpathians, within the Vygorlat-Gutyn volcanic massif. It is located in the Nizhne Hrabovyshche tract, 3.5 km from the village of Chynadiyevo. A stone ridge crossing the forested slope of the mountain blocks the path of the water flow here, and the stream falls off the ledges in three levels, forming a 7-meter cascade of streams that seem to jump from stone to stone.
- Lake Syniak, near the village of Syniak at an altitude of 600 m. The water in the lake is hydrogen sulfate-calcium sulfate, and has healing properties.
- The blue rock outcrops near the village of Synyak are exposed pre-glacial rocks under the top of Mount Buz, which gave the area its name.

- Mount Lovachka in Mukachevo still hides many secrets of the Celts, who settled here in the 1-3 centuries BC. A sculpture of a Celt installed on the railing of the Latorytsia River reminds locals of the ancient times.
- The Celtic Yard in Mukachevo is the only green tourism estate in Zakarpattia that recreates the life, customs, and even dishes and drinks of the Celts who, more than 2,000 years ago, created an ancient proto-city-oppidum on the slopes of the Lovachka and Halish mountains on the outskirts of the city.
