The Chornohora mountain range is the highest ridge in the Ukrainian Carpathians
The Chornohora ridge is one of the most beautiful places in the Ukrainian Carpathians, attracting a huge number of outdoor enthusiasts with its picturesque views every year. Everyone who has visited this place at least once says that the scenery is worth the time and effort.
The Chornohora range or Chornohora (Hungarian: Feketebеrc, Polish: Czarnohora) is the highest mountain range in the Ukrainian Carpathians and occupies a dominant position in their vast expanse. The total length of the main ridge is about 40 km, so it takes 2-3 days to hike it, depending on the experience and physical fitness of the hikers.
Montenegro in the Ukrainian Carpathians
The Montenegrin ridge is recognized as the highest for a reason, because it has 6 peaks with a height of more than 2000 meters: Hoverla - 2061, Brebeneskul - 2035, Pip Ivan Montenegrin - 2028, Petros - 2020, Hutyn Tomnatyk - 2016 m, Ribs - 2001.
A large part of the Chornohora range serves as a watershed between the Tisa and Prut rivers (in the past, it was the border of the states that once included Zakarpattia and Galicia). The western part of Chornohora lies in the Zakarpattia region, while the eastern part stretches southeast and then south. Both parts of the ridge are separated by the Skopes Valley, a deep saddle with an average height of 1518 meters.
While the western part of Chornohora with relative heights of 300-350 m is heavily carved, the eastern part is a more monotonous, massive ridge with high peaks and saddles that do not go below 1700-1750 m.
The slopes of all the main peaks of the Montenegrin ridge are mostly grassy, with almost no rocky placers. That is why tourists can find good trails that will provide them with a comfortable, unhurried way up and down.
Tourism and Montenegro
Despite the incredible views from the Montenegrin ridge, you should never forget about the weather - it changes very quickly here, both in a good and in the opposite direction, and even a short-term summer thunderstorm can turn into a real problem. Therefore, when going on a trip along the Montenegrin trails, you need to follow the weather forecast and build on it, go hiking on the scheduled date, or better postpone it until more favorable weather conditions.
It's also worth noting that hiking on the Chornohora ridge requires good physical fitness (it's no coincidence that some of the most difficult categorical routes in the Ukrainian Carpathians are located here) and the availability of appropriate hiking equipment. In addition to the classic set of individual and group equipment, it is advisable to have a primus - this will make life much easier for the group (you should not count on going to the forest and collecting firewood for a huge fire).
Traveling in Montenegro is not the easiest thing to do, but it is incredibly exciting. Fresh high-mountain air, crystal clear waters of mountain lakes, untouched Carpathian nature and beautiful views for tens of kilometers around - all this together leaves a lot of unforgettable impressions and gives incomparable sensations. And long, tiring routes fade into the background.
The tourist season for the Montenegrin ridge lasts on average from mid-May to mid-October (although June-July is a rather dangerous period for traveling in Montenegro, as it is at this time that there are frequent thunderstorms, from which it is very difficult to hide on the grassy slopes).
