Babai Restaurant, Yavoriv

Babai Restaurant is one of the best-known roadside eateries of the Hutsul region. It stands in the village of Yavoriv (Ryvni hamlet), Kosiv district, right by the Kosiv–Verkhovyna road, and it is hard to miss: log houses with shingle roofs, carved figures, twisted wooden railings and a big «Babai Restaurant» sign are visible from afar. The name comes from a folk-tale character, the forest spirit Babai, a little bearded old man with a sack who was once used to scare naughty children. Today he grins from the facade, carved straight into the logs.

The owners promise a «scarily good» atmosphere, and the reviews agree: on Google Maps the restaurant scores 4.5 from more than 1,200 reviews. Travellers on their way to Verkhovyna stop here, as do families with children and visitors heading to the Sheshory waterfalls, Pysanyi Kamin rock or the Sokilskyi ridge. According to the owners, the staff speak both Hutsul dialect and English, so foreign guests are no rarity.

What to try

The kitchen combines traditional Hutsul dishes with popular Ukrainian classics, and the house speciality is meat products made and smoked on site. Worth ordering:

• «Babai in a jug»: potato pancakes baked with meat, porcini, vegetables, cheese and sour cream;
• banosh with smoked brynza and mushrooms in sour cream;
• kulesha served on a wooden board with fresh pork, garlic and brynza;
• boryshnyk with huslianka (Hutsul soured milk) or sour cream, Hutsul holubtsi in sauerkraut leaves, varenyky with crackling;
• bograch with pork and veal, and porcini mushroom soup;
• a trio of home-smoked meats with house adjika, hot homemade sausage, and barrel-pickled vegetables;
• trout in sour cream or trout skewers;
• for dessert, «Babai's Vybahanka», with mountain-herb tea with honey or uzvar.

Atmosphere and experience

Babai is above all a wooden fairy tale: a log dining hall for 60 guests (up to 40 at a banquet with dancing), a summer terrace with wicker furniture, and a paved courtyard with the restaurant's emblem and carved benches, where children keep spotting new wooden characters. It hosts family celebrations, weddings and banquets, has a separate children's menu and children's parties, and in the morning you can simply stop for breakfast. The owners say that guests receive a little souvenir to remember the visit.
