Stara Vorokhta Restaurant, Vorokhta
Stara Vorokhta restaurant ("Old Vorokhta") is one of the best-known places for Hutsul food in Vorokhta: on Google Maps it is rated 4.6 from more than 6,300 reviews, a huge number for a mountain village. The restaurant stands on Danyla Halytskoho Street, by the river, in a massive stone-and-timber building with a tower and a wide staircase – some travel vloggers compare it to a knight's castle. It is a family business that describes itself as a restaurant of Hutsul, Ukrainian and European cuisine.
Inside, a modern interior is combined with Hutsul motifs. A particular point of pride is the hunting hall with an open fire (vatra), especially cosy on cold evenings. The sound of the river outside and the smell of grilled food create exactly the mood people come to the Carpathians for.
What to try
At Stara Vorokhta it is best to go for Hutsul and home-style dishes:
- banosh – cornmeal porridge cooked in cream, with bryndza, cracklings or porcini as extras;
- bograch and porcini mushroom soup;
- paliushky in pots with mushrooms – a dish highlighted in video reviews;
- blood sausage with cracklings, home-made cabbage rolls, potato pancakes with mushrooms;
- Carpathian cheeses from a family cheese dairy – a good introduction to local cheese;
- lamb – stewed with vegetables, or a leg of lamb roasted with spices;
- trout in sour cream or in a creamy mushroom sauce, and dishes from the grill.
If this is your first time in the Hutsul region, start with banosh: by tradition it is cooked slowly in sour cream or cream, stirred with a wooden spoon in one direction, and served hot with bryndza and cracklings. It goes well with porcini soup and pickled vegetables from the "Home cellar" section – that is what a real mountain lunch looks like.
For larger groups there are sharing sets – the "Opryshok's hearty lunch" or the meaty "Defilada". For dessert try cherry varenyky, pancakes with poppy seeds and honey, or lingonberries with honey and nuts. There is a separate children's menu, and a delivery service for guests staying nearby. Atmosphere and who it suits
Stara Vorokhta is a good place for an unhurried lunch or dinner after a day in the mountains: Vorokhta is a starting point for routes to the Chornohora range, and Bukovel is about half an hour away by car, so the restaurant also attracts those who want a break from the bustle of the resort. It suits families with children, groups of friends and celebrations. Apartments and chalets of the same name belong to the restaurant, so you can also stay overnight.
Keep in mind that in high season and at weekends the restaurant is very popular: book a table in advance, especially for the evening.
