Poriadnyi Gazda Restaurant, Mukachevo

Mukachevo, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine

Poriadnyi Gazda (“The Proper Host”) is a Zakarpattia-cuisine restaurant in Mukachevo, at 36A Erdeli Street, right below Palanok Castle. In the local dialect a gazda is the master of the house, and that idea drives the place: much of what you eat is made in-house. The restaurant brews its own beer, makes cheese, cures hams, smokes meat and bakes bread. It is one of the most popular restaurants in town, rated 4.6 on Google Maps from more than five thousand reviews.

The interior is bright and memorable: several halls with painted ceilings, multicoloured shelves, checked tablecloths and wooden furniture. Hams hang curing above the bar and in display cabinets, and in a separate room wheels of cheese line the shelves. At the entrance guests are met by a counter of house-made products and traditional snacks, and the tables have branded paper place mats to colour in, which keeps children busy while the food is cooked.

What to try

The menu blends the Ukrainian and Hungarian cooking of Zakarpattia. Good choices:

  • bograch – a thick, spicy goulash soup served in a little cauldron, with extra red pepper for those who like it hot;
  • banosh – cornmeal cooked in cream with brynza and cracklings, one of the guests’ favourite dishes (restaurateur Viktor Mykhailov even made a separate video about it);
  • potato pancakes, varenyky, borshch, potato sausage with bacon cracklings and grilled ribs;
  • seasonal specials – in autumn, for instance, pumpkin soup and pumpkin tarte tatin; in summer aubergine dishes and grilled rack of lamb;
  • for the table – house-made cheese, charcuterie and bread, plus home-made pickles.

A particular point of pride is the in-house brewery. According to the restaurant, it has been running since 2014 and brews only top-fermented beer from German hops, malt and Belgian yeast; the beer is neither filtered nor pasteurised, and here it is served at its freshest – “where it is brewed”. Ask at the restaurant for the current beer list and prices: there is no public online menu with prices.

Tastings, shop and events

  • Tasting hall. The restaurant has a separate hall for tour groups where you can sample its own cheese, meat and beer. Tastings must be arranged in advance.
  • Shop at the entrance. Cheese, sausages, hams and gift sets are sold to take away – a handy souvenir from Zakarpattia.
  • Themed days. The restaurant runs holiday promotions; on Beer Day, for example, guests could taste three different house beers free of charge.
  • For families. Several halls, colouring mats for children and plenty of space make it convenient for large groups and families.

Practical information

Address: 36A Erdeli St, Mukachevo – at the foot of the Palanok castle hill. Opening hours: daily 11:30–23:00 (hours may change on public holidays – the restaurant announces this on its pages). Bookings: +380 95 507 56 66. The restaurant has its own mobile app and posts news on Instagram and Facebook.

Getting there: the restaurant is on the way out of central Mukachevo towards the castle, so it pairs well with a visit to Palanok. From the city centre it is a few minutes by car or taxi, and there is a car park next to the restaurant. Mukachevo is reachable by train (services from Lviv and Kyiv stop here) or via the Kyiv–Chop highway (M06). At weekends and in the tourist season the restaurant is very busy and grilled dishes can take over half an hour, so book a table and allow plenty of time for your meal.
