Mount Polenskyi

Polenskyi (also Polensky, Polenski, Polenska) is a 1,693 m mountain in the Gorgany massif. It lies in the Nadvirna district of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, south of the village of Chernyk and east of Bystrytsia, in the north-western part of the Dovbushanka ridge. To the north-east is Mount Kiziiskyi Gorgan (1,617 m), to the south-east Vedmezhyk (1,737 m) and Dovbushanka (1,754 m).

The northern and eastern slopes are steep and hard to cross. The summit and upper slopes are treeless, covered with scree and in places dwarf mountain pine; forest grows lower down.

How to get there

The mountain lies inside the Gorgany Nature Reserve. Our site has no marked route to Polenskyi itself, and the reserve may only be visited under its rules — before you go, ask the reserve administration where movement is allowed. The nearest villages are Bystrytsia (about 4.5 km in a straight line) and Zelena; our routes to the neighbouring summits of Dovbushanka and Vedmezhyk also start there.

Water, shelter and safety

Our map shows no springs or huts within 2.5 km of the summit, so carry all your water. The Gorgany scree is unstable and it is easy to lose your bearings in the dwarf pine: walk only in daylight and good visibility, with a track on your navigation app. Overnight stays in the reserve are allowed only in designated places. In an emergency call 112 or 101 — the mountain rescue units work around the clock.

Interesting facts

• One version derives the name from the word «poliana», a clearing (locally «poliena»); another, linked to an archive photograph, from the name of Nadiia Polenska.
• Polenskyi is one of the summits surrounding Dovbushanka: together with Kiziiskyi Gorgan and Vedmezhyk it forms the north-western part of that ridge.
