Hutsul Land Ethno Park, Polianytsia

Polianytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

Hutsul Land Ethno Park is a space at the Bukovel resort where the old ways of the Hutsuls, Boikos and Lemkos are shown not behind glass but in living form. The park lies in Polianytsia, right behind Lake Molodosti (Youth Lake), and combines an open-air collection of historic houses, craft workshops and a petting zoo. If you are looking for a pottery workshop in Bukovel or want to show children how mountain people lived a century ago, it is one of the most convenient places at the resort.

What to see

The heart of the park is a group of wooden houses from the 19th and early 20th centuries, dismantled in remote mountain villages, moved here and carefully rebuilt with their interiors. The potter’s house comes from Kosmach, and the spruce grazhda homestead, home to four generations of one family, from near Shepit. There are also a weaver’s, a shepherd’s and a hunter’s house, plus a house dedicated to Hutsul folk magic. Unlike in a typical museum, you may handle the objects: sit on a bench by the stove, grind grain on a hand quern or try playing the cimbalom.

  • open-air display of historic houses and household items;
  • petting zoo with goats, sheep, alpacas, deer, mouflons, Highland cattle and birds;
  • suspension bridges and photo spots;
  • the Skrynia gallery and a Carpathian film club showing films shot in the mountains;
  • tea tasting, folk costume rental and a souvenir shop.

Workshops: pottery, weaving and cheese figurines

Workshops are run by professional craftspeople in the potter’s and weaver’s houses. You can sit at a potter’s wheel and shape your own jug with a master’s guidance, or try working on a loom. A special highlight is making cheese figurines (syrni konyky) in the grazhda: these sculpted cheese shapes were traditionally made only in Hutsul villages such as Kosmach and Shepit, so seeing and repeating the technique is a rare chance. All workshops are by prior booking, so arrange the time by phone in advance.

Crafts brought back to life

Hutsul pottery had three famous centres — Kosiv, Kuty and Pistyn — and in the 19th century dozens of potters worked in Kuty alone. Weaving and woollen-blanket making were part of every household. Today you rarely see a jug thrown on a wheel or a rug woven on a loom outside an artist’s studio, and the park lets you try these techniques without travelling to distant villages.
