Dolný Kubín is a town in northern Slovakia, serving as the administrative center of the Dolný Kubín District in the Žilina region. It lies on the Orava River in a picturesque valley between the Lesser Fatra, Oravská Magura, and Chočské vrchy mountain ranges. The town is situated at an elevation of 507 m above sea level and is the largest settlement in the historical region of Orava.
The first written mention of Dolný Kubín dates back to 1314 as a small craft and agricultural settlement. In 1632, it was granted town privileges. In 1683, the army of Polish King John III Sobieski briefly stopped here, resulting in the town being plundered. From 1712, Dolný Kubín became the center of Orava, and from 1960, it underwent industrial development.
Dolný Kubín is known for ski tourism and its rich cultural heritage. Nearby stands Orava Castle, one of the region's most significant landmarks. The town is home to the Orava Gallery, the P. O. Hviezdoslav Museum, and the Čaplovič Library. The local cultural center and the Choč cinema are also important cultural venues.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities in Dolný Kubín. Popular hiking trails start here, such as "Dolný Kubín – Shelter on Kubínska hoľa" and the "Martin Kukučín Trail." Mountain enthusiasts can ascend the Velký Choč peak or visit the shelter on Kubínska hoľa. Notable sights include Orava Castle, the wooden articled church in Leštiny, and the town's museum exhibitions.
