A church that had to look like an ordinary house

The Wooden Articular Church in Leštiny is a Lutheran church in a small Orava village 7 km from Dolný Kubín, in a valley between the Choč Mountains and the Orava Highlands. On 7 July 2008 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with other wooden churches of the Slovak Carpathians. It is a working church with services every Sunday, and Slovakia's best-known poet, Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav, was baptised here.

The name “articular” comes from articles 25 and 26 passed by the Diet of Sopron in 1681. They allowed Protestants in the Kingdom of Hungary to build churches, but on strict conditions: within a year, only of wood, without foundations or metal nails, in a remote place, without tower or bells, looking like a dwelling house and with an entrance not facing the street. Of dozens of such churches only five survive in Slovakia — in Leštiny, Istebné, Kežmarok, Hronsek and Svätý Kríž.

The Leštiny church was built in 1688–1689 at the request of Jób Zmeškal, captain of the guard at Orava Castle and first deputy county head in Dolný Kubín. In the 1770s it was repaired and clad with boards, in 1775 the interior was renewed, and the bell tower, linked to the church by a covered staircase, was added only in 1877. Its bells date from 1764 and 1924.

Interestingly, according to the Lutheran congregation of Kežmarok, the text of article 26 itself did not ban towers or bells — Protestant congregations simply had no money for them, because their property had been confiscated earlier. So the fact that the bell tower in Leštiny appeared almost two centuries after the church was built was due more to poverty than to an outright ban.

What to see

From outside it is a modest elongated building with a large shingle roof on a steep slope levelled by a stone base. The interior, which has survived almost untouched, is all the more striking:

  • wall paintings with floral motifs covering the walls and galleries;
  • a carved Baroque altar from the end of the 17th century;
  • a richly decorated pulpit from the early 18th century;
  • the entrance portal with an archivolt and the covered stairs to the bell tower.

The church stands in an authentic village setting among old trees, next to the parsonage built together with it. It is a quiet place for an unhurried stop, not for crowds.
