Lúčanský vodopád (Lúčky Waterfall)
Lúčanský vodopád is an unusual travertine waterfall right in the centre of the spa village of Lúčky in Lower Liptov, at the foot of the Chočské vrchy hills, 13 km from Ružomberok. The Teplianka stream (also called Lúčanka in the village) drops from the upper edge of a travertine terrace in cascades into small pools. The waterfall is 12 m high according to the Slovak Wikipedia, or 13 m according to the Polish and Czech ones; Polish sources call it the largest travertine waterfall in Slovakia.
The travertine (calcareous tufa) here was built up by gypsum-calcareous carbonated thermal springs – the same that feed the local spa. The Lúčanka itself is poor in minerals, but its warm tributaries have gradually "grown" the steps, which increase downstream and split the stream into cascades. In places the water breaks off rock blocks and moves them several metres, while the cracks fill again with rock fragments and wood and are cemented by new tufa. The exposure of the thick travertine layer yielded rare palaeontological and archaeological finds, which is why the waterfall has been protected as a national natural monument since 1974 (the Polish Wikipedia gives 1996 and an area of 0.94 ha). According to OpenStreetMap there is a cave about 20 m long inside the waterfall. Thanks to the warm springs the water does not freeze even in winter.
The waterfall separates the old part of the village from the spa quarter. The spa in Lúčky has been known since the 18th century: the first spa building was erected in 1761, and its healing water (the Valentína spring, 31.5 °C) is still used today.
What to see and do
- Cascades and a turquoise pool. Below the waterfall is a small pool; thanks to the travertine bed the water has a pale blue tint.
- Night illumination. Since 2022 the waterfall has been lit in the evenings: the colour changes every 30 seconds, up to six colours in all.
- A winter walk. The waterfall is accessible all year, and in winter it contrasts strikingly with the surrounding snow and ice.
- A park with benches next to the waterfall – a handy place for a break with children.
How to get there
This is not a hike but a short stroll through the village: the waterfall lies near the centre of Lúčky and the viewing spots are accessible with children and pushchairs. By car – road III/2216, which branches off the Ružomberok road in Liptovská Teplá; Ružomberok is 13 km to the west, Liptovský Mikuláš 22 km to the east. The nearest railway stop is Liptovská Teplá on the Žilina – Košice line. Marked routes start at the waterfall: Lúčanský Waterfall – Veľký Choč (about 7 km to the 1,608 m summit) and Lúčky, municipal office – Liptovský hrad via Kalameny.
Season and safety
Open all year and free of charge. It is a protected site: do not climb on the travertine steps – they are fragile and slippery, and the tufa itself is protected. The Czech Wikipedia mentions that bathing in the pool below the waterfall is allowed at your own risk; if there are different instructions on site, follow them. The Chočské vrchy are not part of TANAP, so there are no seasonal trail closures here, but wear proper footwear for Veľký Choč. Mountain Rescue Service HZS: 18 300; general emergency number: 112.
Nearby
A few hundred metres away is Lúčky Spa and AQUA-VITAL Park with thermal pools. You can easily walk or drive to the ruins of Liptov Castle (ruins), and 5 km away is Bešeňová Water Park; a little further – Liptovská Mara.
