Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (old), Delyatyn
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a striking work of the Hutsul school of folk wooden architecture.
In 1680, a local church was first mentioned in documentary sources in Delyatyn, though under a different name than today. In the first half of the eighteenth century, there were already two churches here. The modern church was built on the site of the previous, also wooden, church in 1782 (or 1785), but the year 1620 is indicated on the protective tablet on the wall of the shrine - most likely, the original church was built in the 1620s and 1630s.
The building underwent several reconstructions in 1894, 1902, 1911-1912. Today, the log cabin of the Babynets is twice the size of the nave. The layout has an expressive pyramidal silhouette. The original shingle covering of the roof and dome was replaced with metal, and the windows in the walls were replaced with plastic.
The architecture of the church is harmoniously complemented by its interior, a striking element of which is the iconostasis decorated with polychrome carvings and tempera oil paintings. At the entrance to the central part of the shrine, there is a wooden throne with the image of St. Nicholas on the left wall, and a throne with Saints Constantine and Helen in the center of the composition on the right wall. The area of both thrones is completely covered with carved Hutsul ornaments made by the carver Vasyl Turchyniak.
In 1967, the shrine was to be turned into a museum of Carpathian nature, but thanks to the efforts of the faithful and the priest, the church was preserved.
Today the church belongs to the UGCC community.
It is an architectural monument of national importance.
