Yuber Brewery & Pub, Uzhhorod

Uzhhorod, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine

Yuber Brewery & Pub is one of Uzhhorod's youngest and most modern craft breweries. It operates at the Praha hotel and restaurant complex at 38A Verkhovynska Street, on the way out of the city towards Perechyn. The brewery, with a capacity of about 300,000 litres a year, was assembled by Czech specialists using Pilsen technology: it was designed by Josef Krisl, an honorary member of the Czech Brewers' Association who has installed more than eighty breweries across Europe and the USA – and Yuber was his first project in Ukraine.

The focus here is on live beer – unpasteurised and preservative-free, made from quality ingredients: Czech and German malt, Czech and American hops. Such beer is fuller, richer and keeps its natural flavour and aroma.

Why go

What makes Yuber special is the way the beer is served. Freshly brewed beer is transferred into special serving tanks, where it rests without contact with air or other containers, and then flows through dedicated beer lines straight to the taps in the restaurant, the bowling bar and the pub. The beer in your glass was in the tank just minutes earlier.

  • order a tasting flight of several beers and find your favourite style;
  • watch the brewing process from the tasting hall;
  • spend an evening in the spacious 250 m² pub with around two hundred seats – some tables have their own beer taps;
  • combine the tasting with bowling or a sauna and hot tub at the same complex.

What to try

The brewery makes nine beers. Its signature is Uzhhorodske 10%, a pale beer dedicated to the city. Classic lovers will find the soft Golden Bear lager brewed along old German lines and a straight lager; hop fans can go for Magnum IPA (6.5%, 55 IBU) with a pleasant bitterness. Brown Bear is an Irish red ale with caramel sweetness, Black Hill a stout with notes of roasted barley, coffee and chocolate, and LB a light 3.5% pale ale. The wheat line includes the unfiltered Wheat Beer with banana and spicy tones and Yuber Shvabske, a top-fermented German-style white wheat beer with a creamy texture, a sweetish aroma and no bitterness.

Zakarpattia has long stood at the crossroads of Czech, Hungarian and German beer cultures, and Yuber deliberately follows the Czech school – in Ukraine, Czech beer has long been a byword for the real thing.
