Ungweiser Brewpub, Uzhhorod

Ungweiser is one of the best-known city brewpubs in Zakarpattia. It stands at 20 Kapushanska Street in Uzhhorod, next to the regional hospital and a relaxed five-minute walk from the city centre and the famous linden alley. Its main draw is live beer of its own Ungweiser brand, brewed on the premises – the copper brewing vessels sit right in the hall, in full view of the guests. If you are looking for craft beer in Uzhhorod or want to start a beer trip around Zakarpattia, this is a natural first stop.

The name nods to Ungvar, the historic name of Uzhhorod, and the recipes are the work of brewer Vitalii Dvoinykov. Ungweiser regularly brings its beer to regional beer festivals, including Varyske Pyvo in Mukachevo.

Why go

People come here above all for fresh beer straight from the source. Ungweiser serves so-called tank beer: after brewing, fermentation and maturation it is transferred into special serving tanks, where it is kept in single-use bags at a constant temperature and pushed to the tap by external pressure. The beer never touches air or technical gas, so it does not oxidise or go flat and reaches the glass exactly as the brewer intended.

What to try

The core range has four beers: Ungweiser Svitle (pils), Ungweiser Pshenychne (hefeweizen), Ungweiser Bahriane (red ale) and Ungweiser Temne (stout). The brewery also makes a Czech-style lager and the hoppy Hopinator, and seasonal specials appear from time to time – such as the cherry Ungweiser Cherry. All the beer is unfiltered, unpasteurised and preservative-free, so it is best enjoyed fresh, on the spot.

Brewing in Zakarpattia has deep roots: the region lies where Hungarian, Slovak and Czech beer traditions meet, and Mukachevo is said to have had one of the first breweries on the territory of present-day Ukraine back in the 16th century. Modern city brewpubs like Ungweiser carry that line on in a craft format.

Getting there. The brewpub is in central Uzhhorod: about three minutes on foot from Sandor Petofi Square and roughly fifteen minutes from the railway and bus stations. Trains run to Uzhhorod from Kyiv, Lviv and other cities, as do buses; by car the city is easily reached from Mukachevo or Lviv via Chop or Perechyn. If you plan to taste, leave the car behind.
