Lipova alley, Uzhhorod
Every spring and summer, Uzhhorod attracts a large number of tourists. In addition to the majestic Uzhhorod Castle, along the winding Uzh River, there is the longest Linden Alley in Europe, a park and landscape art monument of local significance in Ukraine. It is located on the right bank of the Uzh River, on Nezalezhnist and Studentska embankments, and is 2 kilometers and 200 meters long. It is managed by the Uzhhorod City Executive Committee.
It is home to various varieties of linden trees that bloom alternately from May to July. There is a legend that a capsule with a message for posterity is hidden under a certain tree. It's worth visiting Uzhhorod in the fall, when three hundred linden trees explode with autumn colors. There are about 300 specimens of linden trees planted in two rows. Near the western part of the alley is the Parterre Square Park, a monument of landscape art, and near the eastern part is the Masaryk Ash Nature Monument.
Czechoslovakian architects, building a new neighborhood in the early twentieth century, proposed to place an alley with trees here, which would delight Uzhhorod residents, save them from the heat, be a great place to relax and, most importantly, absorb dust and strengthen the embankment with roots to protect it from floods. The idea went down a storm, and in 1928, here, on the former Roskovich embankment, Czechoslovakian biologists planted linden trees for the first time: a total of 300 trees of various varieties - Crimean, American, Canadian and broadleaf. In the western part of the alley is the "Parterre Square" and in the east is the "Masaryk Ash".
Alongside the alley, in mid-April and early May, sakura trees bloom on Pushkin Square, Dovzhenko and Rakoczy streets in Uzhhorod, and they have also become a feature of the city. The Japanese cherry tree was brought to Uzhhorod in 1923 from Vienna; nowadays, sakura trees grow almost all over the city. In 2009 and 2011, a sakura alley was planted on Kyivska and Slovianska embankments, which also claims to be the longest in Europe.
Almost at the same time as the sakuras, magnolias, Japanese quince, and many other exotic trees begin to bloom in Uzhhorod.
The Linden Alley in Uzhhorod stretches along two embankments - Nezalezhnist and Studentska. It can be reached from the train station via Svobody Avenue. Uzhhorod is a small city, so all the interesting places can be reached on foot. The alley is a favorite vacation spot for residents and visitors.
Due to the fact that different varieties of linden trees are collected here, the alley blooms all summer long. And in the spring, in late April and early May, hundreds of sakura trees bloom in incredibly lush pink and white color on the embankment. This fascinating sight attracts thousands of tourists to Uzhhorod every year. Sakura is recognized as a visiting card of Uzhhorod. The ornamental Japanese cherry tree was brought to Uzhhorod in 1923 from Vienna, and now it grows all over the city. In 2009, a new Sakura Alley was planted on the opposite bank of the Uzh, on Pravoslavna embankment, which is also considered the longest in Europe. Almost simultaneously with the sakuras, magnolias bloom, Japanese quince and Niedzwiecki, Florida and Chinese apple trees bloom.
In the warm season, especially on weekends, there is not always a free shop on the linden alley! Uzhhorod residents love to stroll along this beautiful alley, ride a bike or go for a brisk jog in the morning and evening. In addition, from time to time, interesting events are organized on the linden alley. For example, two years ago, young people painted the entire alley with traditional Transcarpathian patterns, turning the road into a real embroidered shirt. The paint used was unstable, so people could admire this folk art masterpiece for just a month or two.
Not far from the linden alley, there are two more dendrological monuments - the famous 300-year-old ash tree of Masaryk, entwined with vines, and the so-called "Parterre Square". Walking along the alley, you can learn about almost the entire millennial past of Uzhhorod. You will see a unique period of time in the history and architecture of the city from the 9th century to the period of Czechoslovakia. The Masaryk School, the monument to Augustin Voloshin, Pushkin and Masaryk Squares, the Medical Faculty of UzhNU, a branch of the National Bank, the Palace of Children and Youth, a stadium, a suspension bridge, and a transport bridge are also located here.
Korzo Street, Teatralna Square, a pedestrian bridge, the City Council and the "White House" of the Regional State Administration are very close by. The legendary Hasidic synagogue, Uzhhorod Castle, the Skansen, and the Holy Cross Cathedral or Roman Catholic Church can be reached in just 5-10 minutes. According to an urban legend, a time capsule with a message for future generations is even buried under one of the linden trees, but no one knows where exactly.
