St Michael the Archangel Church in Dębno
St Michael the Archangel Church in the village of Dębno in Podhale is one of the best-preserved Gothic wooden churches in Europe and probably the best-known wooden monument in Poland. In 2003, together with other wooden churches of southern Małopolska, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its dark shingled silhouette among the trees has hardly changed since it was built.
The first church in Dębno probably stood here as early as the 13th century, and the present one was built in the second half of the 15th century on the site of an older one. The nave and chancel, of log construction, survive from that time. The timber-frame tower with sloping walls tapering upwards was added in 1601; it is 15 m tall and among the oldest structures of its type in Poland. Around the walls run "soboty" — covered arcades of the 18th–19th centuries that once protected the foundations from rain and worshippers from bad weather. In 1996 and 1998 the church was placed on the World Monuments Watch as one of the hundred endangered treasures of the world.
What to see
The main treasure is the stencil painting from around 1500. It is the oldest fully preserved painting of its kind on wood in Europe: 77 motifs in 33 colours — plant and geometric ornaments, figures and animals, most often deer. Above the rood beam is the Jagiellonian eagle.
- The high altar — an early 16th-century triptych with the Virgin, St Michael with sword and scales, and St Catherine.
- The crucifix of c. 1380 on the rood beam — probably the oldest object in the church; its arms are shaped like natural branches.
- Gothic sculptures of c. 1440 in a side altar, a painted tabernacle and a statue of St Nicholas (1420).
- Ancient bells, possibly from the 15th century, and an embroidered 16th-century battle banner with St Stanislaus.
Film fans will recognise the church from the Polish series "Janosik" (1973): the hero's wedding was filmed here.
Practical information
Dębno lies between Nowy Targ and Lake Czorsztyn on road no. 969. From Zakopane it is about 44 km via Nowy Targ or about 40 km via Poronin and Bukowina Tatrzańska; from Kraków 92 km. There is free parking by the church. Visitors are admitted from 1 May to 31 October: weekdays 9:00–12:00 and 13:00–17:00, Saturdays 9:00–12:00, Sundays 12:00–17:00. There are no tickets — a donation towards conservation is requested. On rainy days entry is restricted or closed because humidity harms the painting, so plan your visit for dry weather. Flash photography is strictly forbidden. Tours are led by a guide and groups are small, so in season it is best to phone ahead. Out of season you can see the church from outside or during Mass (Sundays at 8:00 and 11:00). This is a working parish church — appropriate dress and silence are expected. Information as of October 2026.
Nearby
A few kilometres away is Lake Czorsztyn with two castles above the water: Niedzica Castle and the ruins of Czorsztyn Castle. On the way to Nowy Targ, stop at the sanctuary in Ludźmierz.
