A priest's apiary in Mukachevo

Pcholnik (full name Pcholnik Honey Season) is an apiary and craft brand of natural Transcarpathian honey from Mukachevo. It is run by a local priest, Father Ivan: his grandfather taught him beekeeping, and he later trained at an agricultural college. He explains the name from Old Church Slavonic, where a "pcholnik" is a beekeeper. According to a 2022 report by Mukachevo City Council, the apiary keeps up to 70 colonies of the Carpathian bee, and Father Ivan had by then been keeping bees for 18 years. The brand is listed among Zakarpattia's craft producers on the region's official tourism portal.

Why go: tastings and sleeping over the hives

Pcholnik is a place where you can not only buy honey but see how it is made. Guests can:

  • taste honey right at the apiary;
  • watch the beekeeper at work — from hive and honeycomb frame to jar;
  • rest in the api-house — a wooden hut with a bed built over the hives, where you can doze to the steady hum of the bees;
  • buy honey in branded glass jars or dark-green gift boxes.

The owner himself describes the apiary as a place to be alone with nature and rest your soul. At the same time it is a working farm, not a tourist complex, so always arrange your visit in advance by phone. If you cannot come, you can order honey by messaging Pcholnik on Facebook or Instagram.

What to taste and buy

The range covers natural Transcarpathian honeys, including linden honey and smooth creamed honey; in spring the owner films the acacia bloom — one of the valley's main honey plants — for his YouTube channel. Varieties depend on the season and harvest, so check what is available.

Zakarpattia is one of Ukraine's most varied honey regions: on the lowlands along the Tysa and Latorytsia bees work acacia and linden, in the foothills wildflowers, and in the mountains bilberry and forest herbs. The Carpathian bee is a calm, winter-hardy local breed, and the region's beekeepers have long worked with it. Natural honey crystallises over time — a sign of quality, not spoilage; keep it tightly closed in a dry, dark place.
